Regardless that its for the consoles , differences aren't that big.

Mechanics

Conclusion –The gaming mechanics for Black Ops are very similar to those of World At War. You move like a human being, not like a Super Saiyan. You can throw grenades the distance an average human being can throw grenades, not the distance the Hulk can throw grenades. It takes you a little while to pull out and setup that 80-pound rocket launcher you've been carrying on your back for the past 500-feet. These are all good things though and add to the experience of the multiplayer. Aiming, reloading, running, changing weapons, etc… is all very similar to World At War. There's no surprises here.

Successes Thus Far

-Theater mode is absolutely amazing and is an unbelievably crafty little tool by Treyarch
-Wager matches are a ton of fun and add a whole new game type to the multiplayer mix.
-The Camera Spike perk is astoundingly good.
-Hardcore mode once again has Free-For-All. Thank you God.
-Claymores can be planted and then picked back up in-case you want to move them to another position.

Gripes Thus Far

-It takes too long time to enter the multiplayer menu. Anywhere from a minute to a minute and a half, which is twice as long as it took in Modern Warfare 2.
-The strain on your console is significant and trying to access the menu while in a match can sometimes freeze the whole system. It's happened to me three times already.
-Enemy spawn points are far too often directly behind you in multiplayer almost always leading to your death.
-Enemy gunfire sound is off. For example, an enemy attack helicopter unloading it's miniguns fifty feet above your head should be noisy, instead it's nearly completely silent.
-Barebones and Hardcore match modes should be available to players from the get go or at the very least at a low level. Instead they require you to be level 16 and 18 which is far too high and takes far too long.

Overall Conclusion

Black Ops isn't just a good game, it's borderline revolutionary. It might very well might do what Modern Warfare did three years ago for the future of FPSes. It's campaign might not be the best, but it's solid enough that playing through it is fun and what the campaign lacks, the multiplayer and zombie modes more than make up for. The key here is depth, and Black Ops has a metric **** ton of it.

This is easily the game of the year.

Lol that conclusion makes no sense...Boderline revolutionary? depth? Very uncanny words to me since the statements through-out the review is a "been there... done that" or "kinda weak here but strong their" atmosphere to them.

The conclusion doesn't match the gripes and successes. Those are some pretty big negatives. Also, most of the positives are minuscule things, yet they gave it a 9.5? For some reason I believe money was involved in this review.

From the linked review....

"It's a lot more difficult to get kills and the level environments are perfectly suited for "camping". "

Seriously?!?

I'm sure Black Ops is a decent FPS, but for someone saying the game is revolutionary, they sure fail to mention how.

This review has been bought and paid for, or the reviewer has no idea what he's talking about. I'm going with both. It's seems like it's so hard for so many people to write good reviews.

Wait.. so you guys are saying that we shouldn't all be super excited to run out and buy a game for $50-$60 that's almost exactly like the last 37 games in the series? I shouldn't spend all that money to replace a game that I bought less than a year ago, even though this game is so similar?

Its one of those paid for reviews pre-launch. Totally shameless. Lets wait for some credible review sites to get their reviews up.

Sounds more like a 7 if you ask me. I'm tired of the COD series. Every Call of duty game with the exception of Modern Warfare 1 and earlier have brought nothing fresh, new or exciting to the first person shooter market. COD needs to either go away and never come back or come up with something new and not changing the Title of the game and passing it of as something new every year

Don't let them fool you.. they've been using the same basic engine since COD2. They've only revamped it and polished it up a bit. This is a 5 year-old game engine, and it's showing it's age IMO.

Ah I still miss Ryan Davis, Brad Shoemaker, Jeff Gertsmann, Alex Navarro and Frank Provo..... Guess it comes with the territory with a advertised base review system many sites have these days... Times have changed so much. Well atleast we have KevinV left here. I do like him but I feel I'm getting a single voice or opinion when it comes to ALL PC game reviews on this website.

I think for the haters to agree with the reviews they would have to give it a 2.5 out of 10. Seriously if the guy like the game let him like it, its his opinion. You want him to change what he thinks of the game just so you can besatisfied ? LOL

Graphics: 7 The performance is great, but the visuals are dated, light years behind Crysis, ArmA II, Metro 2033, Shattered Horizon, Just Cause 2, Mirror Edge, etc.

Sound: 5 No 7.1 support, no Dolby Digital or DTS, lack in sound options, no Hans Zimmer or Harry Gregson-Willioms in the OST this time, weapons sounds dull.

Gameplay: 6 No A.I., linear, constantly bounded by scripts, infinite respawn. But the screnplay is better than the last time, indeed.

Multiplayer: 8 Broadly customizable experience with tons of parameters to modify and stuff to unlock; lacks a bit due is mainly a deathmacth game without objective based modes and is no teamwork friendly.

Overall: 6.5 Decent to rent; I spent 61 € in the PC version and I'm a bit surprised about the lack in production values, as the OST or the ugly manual with only 14 pages in black & white and not photos. Definitely Blizzard and Activision are different enterprises...

Gr0wl

What did Modern Warfare do for the future of FPSes ?

It was the first to bring PC games to $60. It was one of the first to force the $15 map packs down our throat...and I believe MW2 was the first to screw PC gamers by taking away dedicated servers :) I may be slightly wrong on some...but they are still valid complaints :P

Is my first COD after COD 1 (COD 2 was with a GPU I bought), I didn't bought/play MW/WAW/MW2 outside the MW demo); I just reach level 50 in BC 2 last week and was searching for new things to do until Vietnam/VIP map pack arrives.

I'm not rich but the money wasn't a problem in this case, but I must agree with you in that probably was a waste; the game simply has low production values.

From what I've been reading in the Steampowered Forums are that the game is unplayable, seriously. Wonder how they got it to run on their system? Unless they played on a console, which BTW isn't having those types of problems.

It's funny how evey new CoD game is the same as the last one but manages to score 9.5, but if another game does one sequel that's too similar it gets slammed.
