I have $700 dollars to build a computer, but I can get a couple hundred more if it's needed. Also, I have a moniter an OS, and will be playing at 10*7. I want to play games like Oblivion on Medium-High. And lastly, I will be overclocking the CPU. So, can anyone help me?

Have a look at the rig I just posted here.

Overclocking that should get you pretty far, there have been reports of them going at well over 3Ghz. However, if you can afford to, I would recommend upgrading that to the E4500 chip and, more importantly, the Gigabyte P35C-DS3R motherboard.

Looking at your avatar, I'm guessing you'd prefer a Nvidia/Intel rig?

I personally would do a 2900xt 512mb over the 8800gts 640mb. This is a good bases to start at, for your resolution you wouldnt need over a 8600gts/2600xt. But if you want the major futureproofing, then go with the 320mb 8800gts from eVGA.

To skinnypete91, yes I would prefer it, but only because Nvidia/Intel has the best stuff at the moment. I'm no fanboy of any brand. Also, does anybody know that when you buy a EVGA GPU and register it, does the 90 day step up period start from the date of purchase or when you register?

I'd go with an 8600GTS, 2GB, and an E6550. ^ Day of purchase, but i wouldn't bother with it anyway because their prices are higher than Neweggs.

Dont go with the 8600GTS, it wont run DX10 games well enough judging from its early benchmarks. Either way (1950 or 8600) you will have to upgrade in a couple of years,, and the 1950 is cheaper and runs DX9 games better.Ifyoucanaffordan8800gtsthough,thengoforthat. Dont bother with the E6550 either unless you have money to burn. Its lower multiplier will make overclocking less simply (you will need a mobo that supports a higher FSB). Stick with one of the E4xxx series-the step up from 2mb to 4mb cache doesnt make that big a difference.

Just wondering, does an extra 2M of L2 cache make a big preformance differance?

Have a look at this- it only gives between 1 and 7% difference in games. In my opinion,it isnt worth the extra money at the moment.

I agree in a way. However, I just bought the parts to a rig with an E4500 and dicovered that the £20 I saved in not buying the 6550 went a long way towards getting much better RAM, which will give a greater performance boost than the extra cache. If, within your budget, you can afford to get all you want and have something left over, get the best chip you can. Otherwise, you are better off spending the money on something else that will see greater gains.

Bear in mind that if you do go with a 6x50 you must have a P35 mobo to run it on.

low end core 2 duo or athlon x2, 7900gs/x1950pro or 8600gts (if you must have dx10) 2gb ram, 320gb hdd are the sweet spot but the 500gb are pretty cheap now, mid range motherboard since you want to overclock and dvd drive is fine
