which CPU should I go for on a laptop? i5 or i7?

does better CPU = low battery life?

ive never used a apple computer before but reviews show mac book pro lasts 8 hours with a i7... but its 2k$ :?

anyone suggest good (not too fat) laptops?

what do you need the laptop for? i5's and i7's are kind of overkill unless you're doing gaming or video editing or something. if it's battery life you want, maybe you should consider a netbook.

You don't need an i5 or i7 for the mjority of school work, if you need a powerful machine the school should provide you with a proper workstation (e-ATX, Operatum or Xeon CPU, 8gb+ RAM, FireGL or Quadro GPU...). Don't get a Mac, if you need more battery life just buy an extra large one or a spare one. Personally i liike the Dell Studio line, there may be better out there now but last time i looked it was the best laptop i could find, it's not too high performance wise but it does have a proper GPU. You can spec it however you want and it's available pretty much everywhere.

the i5 will give you better battery life but the i7 will give you better performance :). So what kind of stuff do you plan on using this laptop for?

You probably wont get by with a netbook for college. Just about every college requires a LAPTOP...so I would def get a laptop.

Most colleges recommend at least 4GBs Ram or better, Intel Core Duo or better, 250GB or more, and mac or windows OS(maybe linux).

You can get away with spending 500-600 bucks on a great computer that will last you 4 years of college. Look at Sony, Asus, Toshiba, HP, and Lenovo. All great brands!

Best of luck!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834127055 If your budget really is $1,200 and you're really just looking for a laptop, that will do. That's a higher performance laptop, keep it in mind. It's for some heavy work programs and possible gaming.

Do you even go to college? I know of no college that recommends laptops, much less their hardware specs. As a college senior I would actually highly recommend not getting a laptop. They're less efficient for taking notes (and outright useless in science and art classes), a lot of professors hate them, and 99% of the kids I see using laptops in class are too distracted by the internet or something else on their laptop to be taking notes. The whole idea that you need a laptop for college is a myth and I can't imagine how it got started.

Here's what you need for college:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Three ring binders with pockets
  • A scientific calculator (not a graphing calc, most professors won't let you use those)
  • Backpack

And optional supplies include:

  • Pens
  • Voice recorder

Anything else is unnecessary. Having your own PC can be nice but most universities have enough PCs in the library and other areas on campus.

"If it's a gaming laptop, it will not last longer than 3 hours" -Random quote made up by random person What do you need the laptop for? Why do you need i7? i5 and i7 do use power more efficiently than C2D, but the difference in battery life is extremely insignificant. If all you plan on doing is note-taking and occasionally looking up on youtube and play some flash games, all you need is a netbook with nvidia ION and 12 hours battery-life. Just a huge word of advice: you don't want anything bigger than a 12 inch for Uni.

I heard you also need two Hummers(one red and one yellow), three dogs who know how to dance and a giant penguin for school work nowadays.

Umm do we have a problem? Students use laptops for other things than taking notes. Sometimes they want to watch a DVD or burn a disk. Something you can't do on a net book without external parts which most people don't want to carry around. Also whoever said you need two hummers is an idiot. One should be plenty

The thing is, watching a DVD, burning a DVD or looking up on youtube are not considered as "school work". Your argument also somewhat backfires on you, since MacBook Pro can't even burn dual-layer DVDs and the speed is only x4.

He specifaclly said he doens't want a netbook due to the lack of features he listed. My point with my argument was that even though he wants a laptop for school chances are he'll be using it for things other than school work. A Mac might be over kill for what he wants but a 12inch or under screen is gonna be crap and won't sport a Optical drive

Just about every BIG university requires a laptop these days for running programs, not taking notes... Anyways it also depends on what degree your studying...Like me, Im studying Computer Engineering and they require all Engineering students and even regular non Engineering students to have a Laptop...Im not sure where you getting... "I know no college that recommends laptops..." I can name countless schools and link pages here for you to prove...

Well yeah, a CS/CE program would require a computer for obvious reasons, duh, but OP didn't say he was a CS/CE major. Furthermore, he said he would just use it for "typing, internet, and maybe music". I don't see anything in there about 3D rendering, programming, etc.

Dunno what's the deal with Macs. Friend told me the OS can't really be bothered by viruses. All you really gotta do is take caution with what you do on the internet. IMO, I don't think it's worth the extra couple hundred dollars for just the OS :P

Understood, it seems like he needs a little computer for school and nothing more so I recommended spending around 500-600 and it will probably work out fine. I stated some recommended specs because a lot of colleges require a laptop for most students and all that info is on the schools website..

do you want or do you need? I'd get a netbook for web, word etc and a good desktop for everything else. powerful laptop = 2 hour battery life if your lucky and around 1 hour on many models when doing demanding stuff. Powerful = not much battery life. What they say battery life is and real battery life are two very different things. often half what they say in the real world.

exactly. before you start a laptop sounds like a great idea, but most of them weigh way to much to take everywhere or they are to small to be all that useful. Apart from when assignments are due it's pretty easy to find a computer epically at night and weekends. I've had a laptop all the time I've been there but have hardly used it. That $2000 would have gone better towards some more snowboarding. They are big heavy (like 2 big fat text books) and need a power source nearby. you wont get a full day from a single charge on any laptop.

anyone suggest good (not too fat) laptops?

sillaris

On battery mode, Macbook Pro switches to IGP (Intel HD). Macbook Pro (Core i5/i7) uses Geforce GT330M with 48 CUDA processors. This is step up from 32 CUDA processor GPU i.e. Geforce 9600M GT.

MBP's GT330M is equipped with 256MB GDDR3 or 512MB GDDR3. Same generation laptops includes 1GB GDDR3 i.e. more memory chips or transistors thus extra energy usages. According to http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-330M.22437.0.html

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 can still beat Geforce GT330M, let alone ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 has a slight advantage over GT330M.

It's all depends on your priories.

Modern Warfare 2 Lan party. Still, a high-end laptop has better performance than most facility provided desktops, except specific workshop computers some facilities may provide.

Anyways it also depends on what degree your studying...Like me, Im studying Computer Engineering and they require all Engineering students and even regular non Engineering students to have a Laptop...Im not sure where you getting... "I know no college that recommends laptops..." I can name countless schools and link pages here for you to prove...ronvalencia

maybe so at some but my uni provides plenty of computer labs and I'm studying design which you need a computer a lot of the time. Plus if you use demanding apps laptops just don't cut it.

Could you name these demanding apps?

maya, 3ds max, large or lots of images in photoshop, modern games, etc etc. Laptops are fine for most things but for highend things they just don't cut it compared to desktops. Try rendering on a laptop and it takes like 2-3x longer than a desktop with a similar cpu speed and type.

Modern Warfare 2 Lan party. Still, a high-end laptop has better performance than most facility provided desktops, except specific workshop computers some facilities may provide.

'' yeah but I doubt there is a laptop out there that can run maya better than my uni's computers. dual 2.66ghz quad core xeons, 8gb ram some nvidia quadro.
