So this is for my friend who wants to build a PC and he wants it to be 800$ canadian taxes and shipping inclusive. This is the build I came up with. Parts from newegg.ca

Asus Black 24X DVD+R 8X

Western Digital Caviar Black 500gb

COOLER MASTER STORM Scout SGC-2000

XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5700 1GB

OCZ StealthXstream II OCZ500SXS2 500W

G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4GB

GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA ATX Intel Motherboard

Inter Core 2 Quad Q8300 Yorkfield 2.5Gghz

The total comes up to 890$ with shipping and taxes. I'd like to bring this down to around 800$. Also please input if you've got ideas on how to make the build better. Thank you.

I'd go with a Phenom II X4 and a GTX 460, instead:
.
EDIT: forgot about the memory. you'll need DDR3. replace it with this.

You might have to shift your expectations a little. Try this for a change:

Phenom II x3 720= $106.99

ASRock 770 Extreme3= $94.99

Antec 550W PSU= $59.99

Heatsink/Fan= $31.99

Those changes right there will save you about $66 (not including shipping/taxes) and put your closer to your $800 mark

What about this revised build over here? I'd rather stick to motherboards that have a lot of good ratings because some of the ones you guys list only have 4 stars with like 6 ratings.

I would get this mobo & cpu. For about $10 more you would get better performance.

Gigabyte-770TA-UD3 SATA 6.0GB/s USB 3.0 AM3 Mobo

AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE CPU

That looks good. Is the rest of the build okay though?

The build looks good with either cpu/mobo setup. Does he need an OS?

Change the gpu to a gtx 460. And a Q8300 is NOT compatible with a P55 motherboard you'll need a socket 775 motherboard like a P5ND great motherboard for the price.

Not adviseable since he's trying to save some cash. A 5770 is more than capable.

Yes I figured that out and changed it. GTX 460 is a little too much for his budget.
