Try your hand at the Gothic games...

Gothic 1, 2 and 3.

The first 2 have kind of an awkward control setup compared to most games out there, but once you get used to it you'll hardly notice the awkardness. These games are not made here in the States, so these European game makers have a tendency to avoid the Disneyland walkthrough at the starts - you get a basic idea of how things work and then you're on your own (which I prefer over the starting you out in a dumbed down kiddie walkthrough area to learn that Ctrl is for crouch and to jump, press Space, etc...).

I personally really enjoyed the first 2; the third one seems like it was kinda forced out and many people said they had issues with the frames per second, even on high end rigs. If you get the third one and you're having issues, search for a font fix for Gothic III - also be sure to install the latest official and unofficial patches out there - they fix a lot of bugs and help with performance.

If you play through the first 2, then get the third to complete the story. I consider the Gothic games a well rounded series (aside from a bit of performance issues on the third one).

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Kotor is great, but not on par with Baldur's Gate or Planescape. Those two are timeless.

Even if you said you wont...try neverwinter nights 2 and specially mask of the betrayer... They are both great RPG... I ve just finished Mask of the Betrayer and this is one of the best rpg experience i ever had... great and interesting dialogue, good action, deep story lines, and lots of choices that can affect the game afterwards... im now playing Planescape Torment (I never played that one b4) and this is great as well (focus on story...less on action)!!

However it depends on what kind of game you seek because the one you played (talking about diablo 1 and 2, MMOs and even Neverwinter nights 1) are more hack n slash than real RPG. Here im talking about real RPG...for instance BG1 and 2 are very goods RPG as well.

Heres other RPGs that you may consider : Fallout 1 & 2 (Classic but old...maybe not ur taste but why not trying it... u will be ready for the third one comming later this year!

arcanum

The Witcher (great game but i did not finish it)

Oblivion

Kotor (if u like star wars it is a great rpg to play...if not its still a good game!!

and so on dont have everything in mind right now

But anyway ur best bet if you like real roleplaying experience is to try NWN2 and the addon, specially the addon...for me its one of the best RPG created along with fallout 1 and 2 and planetscape torment. The Witcher is a very good game as wel, mature and lots of choices to make in the game

Otherwise try oblivion, for me its not worth calling it a Pure RPG but it still a great action/rpg game...

Last thing... maybe you will like it but i really not recommend Mass Effect if you are after a real RPG... this is a dumb down version of kotor...precisely its a mediocre action game with a sense of rpg, the dialogue is very stupid at times...for instance you have 3 choices of answer and 2 of them make ur character say the same thing... sometimes ( and i really got it ) you have 4 choices and they are all the same!!! the player is obviously being tricked why choices to make that are not really choices... before that i trusted bioware but now...hmmm hope that Dragon age will be good.

Hope that help you out... cheers

Yeah It Is.

Kakashi_132

Tatooine says no. The greatest RPG of all time can't have a chapter as forgettable as that. Other than getting HK-47 there was nothing worth mentioning there.

As far as role playing goes, The Sith Lords was better than Kotor.
