any kind of strategy game, just not something you need to pay monthly for...

I like games which are NOT simple...
that economizing and managing your army/city/whatever is complicated, the more complext the merrier :P

How did you manage to leave out the best two strategy games? Medieval 2: Total War. Company of Heroes.

Company of Heroes is great.

And there are also the classics of course: Starcraft(my favorite), and also Warcraft III, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer etc.

Honestly i played all of them and they all get boring pretty quick (xept maybe red alert), the bomb is warcarft 3 its the one that is easiest to get into by playing the campaign and yet online it is the hardest game ive ever played, and if u you get it you have to get the expansion 2. Its mad complex cause all units have special abilites that make them unique, no unit is useless and theres heroes that level and get more powerful the more battle u win which gives a pretty cool aspect of encouragement to fight since unlike most strategy games where you can jus sit tightly back at ur base to build up massive amount of troops and jus go win in a single blow, it encourages you to go out and fight and make ur hero stronger. Also something which i really love is that it doesnt require one of those crazy computers to run it. Btw ive been playing it for like 3 yrs and its still got twists online cause even if u get bord of regular gameplay there like 100 thousand other types of game types u can play.

OOO i agree on starcraft as well, that game was mad chill, similar to warcarft but more futuristic, a little less depth but i think its faster action.  ANd it Also has tons of custom games but Starcraft is kinda old now so the graphics might be low to the stanards now.

starcraft for just the feeling of an all out war kinda thing. But if you truly want a strategy game, total war series is the way to go.

I think that most of the games that have been mentioned are great.  But if you're new to strategy, and want the best place to start, I would have to go with Warcraft 3 for RTS, and if you're interested in turn-based of course try one of the Civs, 4 I guess.  WC3 came out 4 or 5 years ago, and it is still always on the list of the best strat games to play, even compared to such stunners as Company of Heroes and the Total War games.  If you happen to be into WW2 though, get Company of Heroes.  I am obsessed with that game.

i think all the great ones have already been mentioned, but i'll add my personal choices

medieval 2
- it's a combination of turn based empire building and real time combat, so you can build vast kingdoms across europe and destroy muslims (or christians!)! horrah! the amazing 3D engine allows for thousands of units to be rendered at once, making for vast, epic battles reminiscent of those epic recent war movies like lord of the rings and troy... there's nothing quite as fun as charging a line of horse into the rear of an army

dawn of war (and its two expansions winter assault and dark crusade) - brutal, infantry oriented combat with a strong focus on map control, meaning there's no sitting around - ever, you're always out there battling for resources, and the combination of ranged and melee combat along with the very colourful animations make for some of the best intense heroic last stand combat i have ever experienced in a game

they are in my opinion the two best rts games ever made, and are perfect partners for any strategy fan, i'd recommend you check out demos of both

Well, I think I can add nothing new to the list of games already mentioned.
For me the top would be Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, and Medieval 2: total war

I play and love strategy games a lot, mainly RTS ones.  To offer a couple recommendations, I'd first start off with the basic classics such as Warcraft, Starcraft, Age of Empires, etc.  A few of the newer ones I really like are ones such as Dawn of War and it's expansions.  Granted it's manage resources, build an army, destroy other army.  I like this game because you can't just sit back and turtle (mostly) and expect to win, if you want an upper hand you need to go and spread out across the map to gain control points, which give you more resources.

Company of Heroes pushed this theme further, where you not only have to go out and capture points, you have to capture adjacent points.  This leaves room for flanking a supply line and completely cutting it off.  CoH is also really good at implenting more strategic movement of units, such as cover, defenses, positioning turrets exactly, etc.

A new one I'm still learning but really like is Supreme Commander.  It is more of the traditional sense where you acquire resources, build an army, kill other army, but I like it because of how big it is.  You can literally make hundreds of troops, and you have a lot of room to move them around.  You can make transports ferry them around the map for quick troop movement, and you can set specific commands, in order, better than in any other game I've seen (in the RTS genre).

Aside from RTS's I'm not that familiar with other strategy games.  I've played Civ 3 and Rome: Total War, but they didn't appeal to my play style.  Everybody's play style is different, I just gave you a sample of the kinds of games I enjoy and why.

EDIT: Don't mind my sig it's really out of date

Starcraft w/Broodwar

Warcraft III

AoE II, III

Civ IV

The newer games have better AI, but the earlier games have more 'brute force.'
