Avast or AVG antivirus both have free editions. If you have a router there's an integrated firewall too + Windows firewall should be enough. I tried Zone Labs firewall free and professional edition and didn't like either.

Don't use Internet Explorer, don't be an idiot, and you should be fine. Windows Firewall and AVG Free should be enough for anyone with a little common sense.

In my experience i'd avoid the free versions of Antvirus and internet security software. While they might look good because their free i've often found they don't do anything and hardly ever update as much as the paid for versions. That being said i'm currently using AVG v8.0 which i paid a small figure for and it works a lot better than the free version.

But like some have already said...

- Use FireFox to browse the internet, avoid IE at all costs. IE loves to install 3rd party software that can hijack your browser and by that i mean one day you use IE then the next you find a Yahoo toolbar has suddenly appeared on it.

- Browse safely and avoid websites you think could be malicious. Try to stay away from websites with lots of popups aswell.

- Don't click download if you don't know what it is your downloading.

- Turn on the Windows firewall and other security features and make sure their up to date.

- Usually every ISP now provides a modem and a router box which contains an inbuilt firewall to protect you. Combined with the windows firewall this should be pretty good protection. If your unsure about this then contact your ISP.

And finally the biggest thing to remember is dont let anyone use your PC or Laptop unsupervised if you dont trust them or you dont think they know how to properly browse the internet in a safe manner. If you have kids or younger siblings then its usually best to just be around to make sure they dont do anything that could damage your system. I'd also advise you to stay away from ZoneAlarm aswell because when it has glitches they can cause you a massive headache, more so than any other antivirus or internet security software i've ever used!

If you use a Router...there's your firewall...best firewall there is...hardware firewall. Virus scanner...only have it to scan once a week or so...but remember..once a virus scanner finds a virus...its probably too late to do much besides reformat and start over. You can never be sure its cleaned off your system.

Free ones dont work as well as paid for.
AVOID norton, it dont work at all.
Trend Micro would have to be one of the best available (even MS uses Trend Micro and not their own "One Live Care" crap).
Windows Defender doesnt work in the slightest.
