Hmm... I would suggest using the DirectX9 web installer (it auto-detects what DX9 release you have and updates accordingly) but Vista uses a totally different method to replicate DX9, so it probably won't work.

BS. Vista works fine with DX9.

Here's what I'd check out (in order):

  1. Are you installing as Administrator? You should be but it never hurts to ask.
  2. Have you installed the latest DirectX 9 runtime? The current one is from June 2007 and can be downloaded here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

It sounds like you're having trouble with installation and not running the game but if it is in fact the latter, try running the game in XP SP2 compatibility mode (right click the .exe for the game, Properties, Compatibility).

Hope this helps.

Vista uses DirectX10, so I wouldn't suggest doing that...

Vista supports DX10but all shipping versions of DX have included all of the legacy APIs (i.e. DX1 - DX9). Just install the latest end user runtime and you'll have the bits for DX10 and DX9. Mind you that DX10 only works if you have Vista, the latest DX runtime (or the one that shipped with Vista as a bare minimum), and a DX10 GPU.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I have Most Wanted running on Vista (64-bit version though). It installed as usual (normal), didn't have any problems, but bottom line is you should be able to get it working :) Try itchy's suggestions.

Something to try...

"DirectX Error when Installing: When installing the game if you get an error that DirectX9.0c is not installed, even if you've installed DX9.0c already, then find the game's Autorun.exe file (in the base directory of the game CD), right-click on it, select Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, tick the 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and select 'Windows 2000'. Then double-click on Autorun.exe to begin installation. Make sure to turn off compatibility mode after installing the game."

And it works just fine for me without doing anything extra, weird :?

Hmm, how about going directly to EA support and trying their suggestions. Here's one with a lengthy work-around where you copy the cds to your desktop and install from there link

If that still doesn't work, check out (search) some of the other Q&A's for Most Wanted example

other than this you may be missing a .dll dx9 file.
