Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new PC and I'm a console fanboy at heart. Due to this I don't know the first thing about PC gaming and could really use some help buying a rig. My budget is about $1700-$2200, I'm not completely useless so I should be able to assemble the thing myself. I'm only really going to use it to game with and watch movies.

Any help with this would be much appreciated

Useless guide is useless.

@TC, you should be looking at a (assuming your from the US because you don't state currency);

CPU: i5 2500k

RAM: 4GB DDR3

GPU: GTX570 or GTX580

HDD: A small SSD for the OS and a bigger one for games/movies

PSU: 750watt should be plenty (Corsair, Antec, Coolermaster)

Case: HAF-X

OS: W7 home premium

That's a HUGE budget. That kind of money will not only give you a kick-ass rig, but also a rig that will be easy to upgrade in the (far out) future.

Do you need a keyboard/mouse/monitor as well? Or just the rig itself?

Man, I love that budget. I'll look for some parts and post a build in a bit.

Whole build is ~$2,000 and prolly less with rebates.... could run anything and later down the road SLI the 580s. Also overclocker friendly.

I like to low-ball. If I ever have a budget I make it my goal to build something for less than my MAX budget (lame way of saving money). GTX 590 is like $750 I think, 580 is ~ $500. If it is worth anextra $250 to whomever then go for it.

Thanks for all the help guys :D

The budget is from my holiday job, I'm planning an awesome 16th bday XD

Also, the budget doesn't include anything other than the rig. Although I will probably buy a new monitor, keyboard and mouse when I get my funds back up, so any ideas are much appreciated.

:S I'm in Aus btw, sorry I forgot to mention

Also, as I said I'm useless with PC hardware, what's the deal with cpu/motherboard compatablility? How do I know what can/can't go in what.

Check the socket, like LGA 1155 motherboards can only use socket 1155 cpus.

Pretty easy to match up,

AMD - Only consider 955/965, 1090T and up, these are all AM3 chips, so they fit in AM3 boards, they also fit in AM3+ boards.

Intel - i7 9xx chips are all 1366 socket, i5 7xx and i7 8xx is socket 1156 (avoid these as they are last gen), the i7 26xx and i5 25xx is socket 1155 (these are what you want), the i5 2500k and any 1155 socket work, but try find one with p67 in the name/description (in short words, they are better).

Besides these, not much else, and you can't mix n match AMD and Intel CPU's.
