Hey everyone I am really wondering on if I should upgrade my rig in a couple months. Here are my current system specs

Case: Antec Three Hundred

GPU: GTX 260

CPU: Q6600

Memory: 8GB Nvidia SLI OCZ

Motherboard: MSI P7N SLI-FI

PSU: 850 watt Thermaltake Key 3 Spirit

OS: Windows Vista Home Preminium 64 bit SP2

I am happy with my current setup but my motherboard is not the best for overclockng and I was thinking about upgrading it to a Asus Rampage Formula. Then I thought maybe I should just upgrade to a Core i7 920 and build a new rig all together. So my question is should I upgrade to a Core i7 or just upgrade my current motherboard to the Asus Rampage Formula? Also is there a reason for me with a Q6600 to really upgrade to a Core i7 when all I am doing is gaming? Then I thought it might be nice to have a socket 1366 CPU so I can upgrade in the future. What should I do guys I am really not sure myself.

Overclock the CPU and perhaps get a bigger case :)

Thanks for your response but I really like my case and it keeps all my components plenty cool.

I'm feeling the i7 itch myself and have a similar system, but just can't bring myself to do it given the sheer expense. Chances are I'll just upgrade the graphics card to a Fermi/GT300-based one later, get more hard drives, and perhaps get a capture card. Then I'll stick it out until Sandy Bridge or later as I desperately try to save up at least another US$1000. What's hindering your overclocking exploits on that motherboard, though? I'm just using a basic P35 board, and can get that to hit 400 MHz FSB with a bit of extra northbridge/MCH and FSB termination voltage. Can the 750i really not go that far?

Thanks for your input Nameless player but I really do not know how to overclock and from what I have read the MSI P7N SLI-FI is not that great of a overclocker that is why I was thinking about upgrading to a ASUS Rampage Formula and then trying to overclock. But if you could tell me how to overclock that would be greatly appreciated.

The 750i is a capable overclocker. Switching to another board won't make it easier, unless of course you're trying to break a frequency record. I suggest reading up a bit and shoot for a few hundred extra MHz.

My favorite guide? That would probably be the one on Tom's Hardware by graysky. It's VERY thorough, but keep in mind that he's a bit of a windbag at some points.

If you're uncomfortable with that article, there are numerous competent overclocking guides that can be found with a quick Google search. I suggest reading before attempting it, as there are many many stupid things that can happen on the first try.

Um, you should overclock because that processor is actually still good by todays gaming standards if you can raise it to 3.x ghz or so. It is also probably bottlenecking that video card at the moment. No need to upgrade you have a fine machine. Even on that motherboard you shoudl be able to hit 3ghz or so.
