Ok My sister's boyfriend build a comp yesterday and when he booted it up it loaded bios and then he started installing XP and it shut off and won't come back on. Now my theory is that its his power supply but maybe some of u have had this problem before and can at-least give tips on how to find out what the problem is. Just so u know He's not completely computer dumb and he does no what he's doing he actually help me solve a problem i had when building mine.

His specs are something like this

8800gts ( new model )

300gb HD

680w Power supply

phenom Cpu

1 DVD rom drive

msi canine A2 platnium

curial ballistic 2 gb

So my theory is that if it is his power supply it's a complete dud because 680 w is by far enough power imo.

Could be the PSU died, or the CPU HSF wasn't installed properly (killing the CPU/MOBO), or a faulty MOBO, or a bad power connection at the board (or switch). He needs to check all the connections, swap out (test) the PSU and check the HSF to make sure it's seated properly. These things should narrow the search for the cause.

Just make sure the 4 pin CPU power connector is plugged in. Other than that it probably is a bad PSU, if it is, it could have fried some other components. RMA it if possible. HSF installed wrong will also do this, and fry the CPU, however it will usually still turn on(fans spinning).
