I have a friends laptop here and it will not connect to the internet. He said it worked fine for a while then just won't allow him to access the web. It says it is connected, but nothing will come up.

I have done a lot of googling, and running around in circles, and still have nothing

The most I have come up with is that the IP address was 169.xxx.xxx.xx I have read this is when it is not getting an IP from a DHCP server. After messing around I got it to show the correct IP, 192.xxx.xxx, but it still would not give interent access. I then tried RUN>CMD>ipconfig /all(shows the proper IP)>ipconfig /release(all 0's like it should be)>ipconfig /renew(it gives me that darn 169 this time.

I know enough about the internet to use it, but not fix something like this. I would appreciate any and all suggestion

Yeah, I tried both wireless and wired, both no luck.

The owner just picked up the laptop, but we are still open to suggestions.

hmmm, you can try uninstalling the wifi drivers and reinstalling them and then see if it works.

unplug the router, wiat a minute, then plug it back in and try to set up the copnnection again.

if it is not conencting to the dhcp, then its probably just plugged up.

or dchp isnt enabled on the router..

or the tcp/ip stack needs to reinstalled.

im just gtiving the most common answer. it could be a number of things, but if its the same router thats been sed, it should have no problem connecting to the dhcp. Vista did the same thing for me, came up with a lan connection rather than my cable. a simple reset of the router worked for me

well yea, always start with the easy stuff. I was really just adding to ur thoughts. I mean, several heads are better then 1.

if its vista it could just be the "local only" issue...
