My processors been acting up lately so I plan on replacing it soon. I'm looking for a good budget gaming mobo/cpu combo. Ideally I want the 2500k/p67 but I don't think I'll be able to afford it. Is there anything around that quality coming out anytime soon that is cheaper. If not, what can you suggest I buy for around $250. Gaming is my primary use for the processor, so blending speeds, photoshop use, etc won't affect me.

BTW, I'm Canadian so keep in mind newegg.com prices differ on the canadian site. NCIX and Cananda Computers are the two main sites i use.

Thanks.

under budget and significantly better

if your unfamiliar with the cpu the ahtalon II x4 is a really ncie budget cpu in the grand scheme of things they sit equal with the lower end core 2 quad and assuming your baord has no support for them the athalon II x4 is a welcome replacement i went with a ddr2 board to avoid you buying new memory

now if you in fact have support for a c2q here is what i recommend

but preformance wise you dont gain much voer the athalon II x4

This BE Phenom II will give you much better performance for your money plus it has an unlocked multiplier like the k sku Sandy Bridge processors. It will need to be overclocked to compete with an Intel processor but it'll save you money.

Also, if you have a Microcenter near you, they usually have better prices of processors like this AMD Phenom II for $99. It's not a BE though.

If gaming is all you do I would honestly spend the $250 on a new gpu. A 5770 is on the weaker side. You're CPU at those speeds is damn good. Quad core is vastly overrated in terms of gaming. An upgrade to something like a gtx 560 would increase your frames much more than a cpu upgrade will.

I agree with you but like I said my CPU is having problems. I can no longer maintain an OC so I have to run it at stock speeds and even then its not stable.

a 5770 a abd card ahaahahaha i laughed so ahrd reading this i stopped crying tears and cried blood instead

a 5770 is ample for sub 1680 x 1200 gaming and can easily play any current game on high @ 1440 x 900 or lower resolutions and in several cases it can max them out. its a prime gaming card that has stood the test of time and i imagine will continue doing its job for another year

You could just get a new Socket 775 processor if you're sure it's the CPU that's having issues. At half your budget you'll probably be gaming in perfect comfort for at least another year or two with current titles. I'm still playing on an e6550 without issue! Boz

I thought about that too but my cpu for example still sells for close to $200. For double the price I could get a 2500k/p67 combo that would last me 6 years. If i could get a CPU for $100 then it would be a different story.

You won't get a replacement e8400 at that price, but you've still got sub-$100 options for an LGA775 that'll run games no problem, the $80 E6500 chief among them. As demonic_85 mentioned, also consider Microcenter if you have one nearby, since they'll sell unboxed CPUs on the cheap (since I assume you don't need a CPU fan).

I'm just trying to save you a few bucks since you've got a nice mobo already, and while a "slower" processor might seem like a downgrade, the difference between CPUs makes less and less of a difference in most games, so the move is going to feel more lateral in the real-world. You'd be hard-pressed to do better than what ionusX is recommending from a value standpoint if you go the full-replacement route (and it's what I'd pick up if I were building a new PC, frankly), but I don't see it being a substantial improvement over an $80-$100 replacement CPU for your existing mobo.

Good luck!

(slaps forehead) Why didn't I think of that? So long as you use a reputable reseller, E*Bay is the perfect solution in this situation (heck, you could get a replacement, even)!

Regardless of your opinion on the card a GPU upgrade will do alot more for him than a CPU upgrade in terms of gaming regardless of resolution.

A graphics card won't do him any good if his CPU isn't working. His original and subsequent posts are not concerned with a graphics card in any way.

Thinking about this a bit more, are you sure the CPU is the issue? If you're having stability issues, it could just as easily be the power supply dying, memory gone bad, or undervoltage to the CPU. I'm not an expert in overclocking by any means, but I've replaced parts before that were not causing the issue (to my detriment).

Good luck,

Boz
