So iv'e been trying to run the Diablo 2 demo on Vista now and during the setup it even said it WILL work on this computer and all, anyway it takes about 5-10mins to load the main menu and when that is loaded i choose a character and then it begins loading and it does not stop the music carries on but the loading screen just stays there, i tried leaving it there a few times and then had to shut my computer because it would just stay at that screen. After trying a few times I eventually tried running it again and just left it for 1 1/2 hours and when i came back to it it was the loading screen still!!! Then i pressed the space bar to see what would happen and it just exited out, does anyone know how to get this demo working on Vista because i want to get the full game and if this does not work on here then there is no point!!

I have tried, running it as an admin, running it in compatibility mode for XP sp2, run in 256 colours, disable visual themes, disable desktop composition,

What else is there and how do i get it to work? PLease help thanks!

No idea about the demo but the actual game works just fine on both Vista and 7 (64bit both)

I've played D2 in Vista 32-bit. Of course, that wasn't the demo. The demo sucks.

Thanks but i don't want to buy the game and then find that it won't work either, are problems with the demo frequent?

Diablo 2 (and expansion pack) worked fine for me on Vista 32 and work fine for me now on Windows 7 64. One thing people tend to forget is that demos rarely contain final fixes/updates that make older games run on modern systems - they tend to be development branch forks of a certain snapshot of code, with just enough content to let a player see if the game is for them. Unfortunately that means they tend to have big issues with more modern operating systems. [Take Freedom Force & Freedom Force vs The Third Reich for example - the demos for both of those games do not run on Vista/7 without major issues, but the full games run 100% fine].

So you recommend just getting the game anyway?

In Vista/W7 I recomend to go to the starting icon in the Diablo II holder and change his properties in "compatibility" to "work as Windows XP 32 bit SP3" device. Before doing this in my W7 64 the game was unable to recognice my mouse wheel.

Create a shortcut to the demo exe (if it didn't create one already).

Right click shortcut and choose Properties.

Selectcompatibility mode for XP SP2

Check mark "Disable visual themes"

Check mark "Disable desktop composition"

That's the best you can do. If it doesn't work, then its just a problem with the demo.

The game doesn't work without patches with recent video cards, since he can't patch the demo, I don't think it's going to work. I remember it was the case many years ago.

Blizzard games got such reputation that having a demo and not the game itself is a shame.

Iv'e done that but also clicked 'run in 256 colours' and ran it as admin it just stayed at the loading screen for over 1hr with the music still playing

I'll give it one last try now and if does not work then i'll just un-install it; thanks for all your help btw
