Why get two cards right off the bat? Use that money and get a stronger single gpu, so you have the option of adding another down the line.

Any suggestions for a good single gpu solution? Aren't the new generation of cards releasing at the end of the year?

Thats one of the BEST ideas one can have! Theory being, ya get a KILLER GPU now (GTX570, 580 or whetever AMD is doing), then down the road when games are no longer "maxable" you buy another identical card (and since this is at least a year down the line its gonna be cheaper) and bang....you are right back to the top. Downside might be the need for a beefier PSU though.

1st thing, change that mobo to a MSI Big Bang Marshall, get a single GTX580 or if you got the money, a 580 Ares.

or you can get a GTX 570 Overclocked IE : Zotac GTX 570 !AMP usually cost about 230$ Less then a GTX 580 and i suspect it will cost approximately 210-250$US next year But only AFTER MIR Right now a GTX 570 Overclocked at Factory such as AMP! cost 350$US While a GTX 580 vary from 450$ AFTER MIR TO 500$US

But if you have the money for a GTX 580 Go for it the GTX 580 should cost about 350-380$US AFTER MIR around Q1 2012 because a New Generation of gpu should release IE : HD7xxx / GTX 6xxbut i doubt new generation to totally annihilate it previous generation here for so it it might be still a good idea to pick a good card in this year and SLI IT later

you can also go for this psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341045 189.99$ 159.99$ AFTER MIR
also it rated 9,5 By JonnyGuru and is suposse to be a TIER 1 PSU

Any specific manufactuerer's that are favored? I have always used EVGA for Nvidia chips for their excellent customer service and lifetime warranties, and step-up programs.

EVGA / Zotac They Both Offer Lifetime Warranty can't be wrong with EVGA tough but Zotac usually give more Mhz Per $ As Factory Overclock IE : The Amp! of Zotac usually cost less then the Superclocked of EVGA but not alway just that it was common in other gpu's alway check price :

but you can also rise those mhz at home just so you know as long the temp are safe while stressing it : like you don't need to buy a Factroy OC GTX 560 TI or GTX 570 to OC It close to the same value

but usually there a reason it cost more it because the cooler as an different heatsink & fan then Stock that is let say 20-30% more cold IE : Asus DirectCU or Sapphire toxic it to allow easier overclocking and usually in the same case : quieter GPU even if OC like instead of do 52-56dBA at OC cause fan go at 75% all time it will be 33-37dBA

This is the Evga Superclocked but i didn't check benchmark recently of how it perform and it mhz vs other Overclocked GTX 580 it would ask me to spend few minute to check the result : i can post the result afteward

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500186 this is Zotac AMP!

i think the evga at low price is the best it seem the OC for nearly +100mhz don't worth all the cost it can come with but ur the one to judge

Heres why to go with EVGA 580 SC:http://www.geeks3d.com/20101206/tested-and-burned-evga-geforce-gtx-580-sc-review/5/

Cheaper on EVGA's website as well:http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=015-P3-1582-AR&family=GeForce%20500%20Series%20Family&sw=

Exactly cheaper but a bit lower mhz : you can get it at the same rate at home i bet tough then the MSI Lightning : while msi not lifetime warranty so it 3 Year is considered good but it sure when you buy such a card ud like it lifetime warranty :P and won't push in for you know +37-50mhz

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127567&cm_re=GTX_580_MSI-_-14-127-567-_-Product

and if you buy that card be at least sure you might SLI It in like 1-2 year.

i think you should else just buy two at 230-250$: better performances now ;) like 2X HD6950 2GB > 1X GTX 580

I think I will splurge now on the 580 and come back in a year when the price is half and get another one. I have to remember that I only play at 1920x1200.

A year is a long time, you should SLI as soon as the next gen cards release, because they wont be produced much longer.

Depending on the price/performance of the GTX 580 SC when the new gen cards come out, I may buy another 580 or buy an improved new gen card.

EDIT: OR, I could go with two of the Radeon 6950 Xfired for less than the cost of one GTX 580.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_6950_Vortex_II/19.html

if price a mather you can oc ur card at home in case of HD6950 1GB/2GB without need those unreferenced cooler unique to each one of the GPU manifacturer IE : MSI Twin Frozr or Powercolor Vortex II but it would be more loud then a Factory Overclocked one anyway but you don't care much when you get the awesome performances from overclocking just saying

Also if you pick the the 2GB it make a total of 4GB of GDDR5 to Render in the game that take it so if i was you Id make sure i have at least 6/8GB DDR3 in the computer on ur PC 8GB 1333mhz C9 > 4GB 1600mhz C7 just you know specially in a SLi / Crossfire Setup

it can run at 4GB DDR3 fine but i remember with benchmark that SLI / Crossfire )with big GDDR3-5 Memory Card you are better having more ram over the quality of ram in any of the case

one of these cards is enough for any gaming youd want to do and is only slightly slower than a 580 gtx. These cards also oveclock really well, and come real close to a 580 gtx in most games.
