Alright my computer has a 320GB hardrive and i need more space. I have about 8gb of space left and half my games on steam aren't even installed. I was wondering should i get a External or a Internal Hard drive? I was thinking an internal hard drive because alot of my space has to do with movies and music which can be put on a internal.

Id recommend grabbing a 1 Terabyte HDD. U can get a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 for $75 bucks. This way files can transfer much faster than USB. Unless u want to spend money Upgrading to 3.0, and then buy a 3.0 External HDD.

But an internal HDD is much more cost and performance effective.

Or you can get an external enclosure for an internal HDD. I thought I saw Newegg having 1T drives on sale around $60 this weekend.

If i get a 1TB HDD or anything like that, do you guys recommend any particular ones and would there be any programming or any type or anything other than plug and use that i'd have to do?

The Samsung F3 is definately a winner..

And if you get an extetrnal HDD enclosure - Ur still limited to the speed of USB. So instead of moving a 4gig file from 1internal HDDto another - which would take only a couple minutes - Transferring those same file to an external HDD will take 3times as long..

Nah i won't get an enclosure, i'll just go with the samsung. Now is there any formatting i got to do to it? And is there any way i can switch the 1TB to my main drive and the 320GB to my secondary, or would that serve no purpose or performance gains?

Anyone care to give me the reasons why i should get a external vs a internal and vice versa. Like the pros and cons. Although portability sounds great i probably would never use it except maybe for transporting movies around.

biggest issue with an external, is the slow speed when backing up large files thru usb. unless u go usb3.0 .. but thats expensive.

I would just go with an internal 1 TB drive. I have the Samsung F3 and it's marvelous.

It shouldn't be an issue. Once you install your drive your drive with the Operating system on it will be C: While the new drive will be D or E: It will act just like your main drive it wouldn't serve much of a purpose to reinstall your OS on the 1tb.

Wouldn't really serve any purpose, although it's not difficult to do. You can do it by getting drive cloning software (Acronis has a free trial and does a good job) and running that - transferring your 320 to the new drive. Then just swap the drive boot order in your BIOS and you'll be good to go. Once you've verified that it all worked properly, you can scrub the 320GB drive and use it for storage or backup or something.

You may want to consider partitioning it.
