this is my setup...

e6700/p5b deluxe/2gb XMS2-800mhz ram...

This is my first attempt at overclocking, and im not really sure how to go further... here is what i have done so far... i have disabled most of the stuff i need to in the bios... i have done my ram timing and voltage... not i am trying to get my CPU's FSB to 400 so that my ram is at 800mhz, since its 1:1... my only problem is my multiplier is at x10... and i dont think icould/want to go to a 4.0 lol...i enabled the modify ratio support in the bios... and i can highlight the ratio, x10, but i cant change it... i need to get it to x8....

anyone know how i could do that or why i am not able to change it? aslo what do i need to do about other voltages... besides ram...? am i doing any of this right? i tried to read as much as possible but im kinda stuck on the multiplier and voltages... can somone please help quick! thanks

I have no clue how to help you since i taught only the x6800 had unlockable multiplier... but i have a similar setup with a e6700@3,33GHZ with ram@834MHZ with 4-4-4-12 timings, making it a ratio of 10/8... works great

Why are you going for a FSB of 400MHz?

You do know it'll be much more effecting to just go for a FSB of 300 or something and keep the multiplier at 10? With overclocking, you're trying to achieve a faster clock speed, not necessarily pushing the system bus to its limits.

I don't know anything about the P5B's BIOS, so I can't specifically help you there. Try searching some online reviews of the P5B Deluxe and they should show you how to overclock in the BIOS.

But I recommend that you keep the multiplier at 10, increase the FSB to something like 300MHz and changing the memory multiplier to something like 2.5.

Set the FSB to 333 and be done with it, make sure you raise the voltage. You can't change the multiplier.

To have 1:1 ratio, you need to put your ram at DDR2-533 in the manual overlocking option... and then raise the FSB.

Yes, you can.

You can change the multilier down, but not up (or above the factory multiplier). Only Extreme Editions have unlocked multipleirs that allow them to be tweaked up or down.

TC do you have the option to enable 'Modify Ratio Support'? Here:

ya i do... i just figured out how to change it... so you think i shouldnt change the multiplier? i was going to do a x8 multiplier, set the FBS to 400 and have the ration 1:1 so the ram frequency is 800.... that a bad idea or should i leave the multiplier at x10 do like 320 and have the ram to auto?

I've been using Intel for most if not all my computing experience, so I think I would know from EXPERIENCE.

Yes you can REDUCE the CPU multiplier below its factory setting (for the E6700/E4400 you can change the multiplier between 6 and 10). If you have an Extreme Edition/FX Intel/AMD CPU you can both reduce or raise the multiplier to your desire.

ya i do... i just figured out how to change it... so you think i shouldnt change the multiplier? i was going to do a x8 multiplier, set the FBS to 400 and have the ration 1:1 so the ram frequency is 800.... that a bad idea or should i leave the multiplier at x10 do like 320 and have the ram to auto?

I'd go for the higher clock on the CPU, so yeah, leave the multiplier at 10. Then, raise the FSB so that you get your desired CPU clock speed (3.0 to 3.33GHz is the current sweet spot, which leaves you with a FSB of 300-333MHz).

As for memory; you can change the memory multiplier (and the latency) to whatever values you're comfortable with. Most people with a FSB of 333MHz either reduce the memory clock speed to DDR2-667 with 3-3-3-9 timings or go for DDR2-1000 with 5-5-5-15 timings for stability. So long as the system is stable, just go for whatever you want.

Also, did you flash the BIOS to the latest version?

ya, i flashed the bios b4 i started... i think i am going to do ddr2-800Mhz at 5-5-5-12, and FSB at 300 with x10 multiplier....

im still confused about voltage tho... what do i do about that? i already set the rams voltage, but im not sure about the cpu

Voltage...

Does the P5B have an 'Auto'/'Auto-Optimise' setting or something?

Yeah, just a bit too hot.

Try and stay under 60*C.

What's the voltage?

That's too hot, i recommend reseating your zalman and clean off the old past and put some good one.

Unless you have bad airflow in your PC?

What are you using to measure temps?

PC Probe (came with my p5b deluxe mobo) read about 40 C at idle and about 50-55 C at full load... While TAT and core temp read about 55 C at idle and 69 C at full load... if i go into the bios and check temp its usually around 30C....

i have a e6700, with a zalman heatsink...

btw how do i clean the paste off the cpu......? and how much should i use when i reinstall it? i have a little thing of arctic silver...

I dont know if 69c under 100% load is really that bad, Most people say thats too hot, but you would never come close to that with regular use.

That's too high for just a clock speed of 3.2GHz.

Reduce the voltage to 1.3.
