Alright, so I'm looking for a HDTV...my needs are basically that it is 52'', 1080p, ~$1500, works well with a PS3 (or whatever gaminig system - so no "ghosting" or anything like that), and looks great when playing movies. I mean I suppose that's stuff everyone wants from their TV right? :D Anyways I've been looking at a Samsung LN52B550 and am just wondering if that is a good option. I'm still somewhat in the dark about certain specs on it. For example the response time is 6ms, on a PC monitor you look for 2-3ms for gaming, but is 6 fine on a TV as big as 52''? I mean the reviews on Amazon sound great, but I was just looking for some more insight...if anyone here has any other suggestions I'm open to them! Thanks for any help!

Samsung generally has great products, and 6ms response time is fine, should be a great set for gaming and movies.

Does the fact that it only has a 60hz refresh rate and not 120hz really make a difference?

The hz thing really isnt that important. May as well get that TV at a good price and wait till the newer stuff becomes more common or OLED comes out (and gets bigger and WAY cheaper lol).

How can u see if a TV is good, w/o actually looking at the picture quality?

Specs dont mean anything to me, a TV could have great specs, and another could have bad specs, but if the TV looks great (picture/sound), I wouldn't care, I would still buy the inferior TV (specs).

Try to find reviews i guess then. Each person is subjective in what they think a good picture is and usually its never the same thing. If you can see if maybe Best Buy or another retailer has that TV on display and judge for yourself.

Depends... how do you feel about motion blur... and good chances no matter what Tv you get its gonna have a HDtv quirk. Wheather you notice it or not is up to how good your eye sight is and how well you pay attention to details... You may not see anything at all who knows.

Well thanks for all the advice. I'm gonna head over to the local Best Buy today and compare a whole bunch of HDTVs and then make a selection, since that seems like an important thing to do before just ordering one online and hoping that I like the picture :P

If you are sitting further than 6-7 feet from teh TV, take a look at the 720p plasma's. Panasonic or Samsung. You will save some money and get better image quality.

Actually thanks for that advice...found some nice Samsung 50'' 1080p plasma's that were cheaper than most of the LCDs. Guy at Bust Buy that was helping me was mostly talking bull, but he did have one piece of good advice: "now is a good time to buy a plasma" - Think that'll be what I end up with since it'll be used in a basement anyways which I've heard is ideal for a plasma

Just something I've heard in the past...was told that the semi low light that comes with only having a couple of windows is good for plasma screens, and LCDs for that matter...but not, for example, in living room that has some very large floor to ceiling windows that let a lot of light in all throughout the day. That's just what I've heard, haven't actually had any sort of HDTV before :)

Well if thats the case, I should really move my plasma to the bathroom. My lounge doesn't let in much light anyway, and it has curtains, y did they invent them, to let in less light, lol.

Some people say that LCD's are better than plasmas in bright rooms because they often have less glare due to a less reflective screen. The funny part is that the best LCD's have a glossy screen that behave exactly like the plasmas.

AFAIK, 120hz can scale down to 24hz which helps if you're watching a movie.

If you go with an LCD, get one with the 120hz refresh rate... it makes a huge difference. There are some available with a 240hz refresh rate, but they're not really in your price point. Plasma's refresh at 600hz... which is why many people feel that they have better pictures, and can make a 1080p LCD look poor while running at 720p. But you definitely need the higher refresh for gaming.

Plasma's don't have "refresh rates." Refresh rate are something linked solely to LCD technology and is responsible for the "blur" associated with LCD TV's with fast moving objects. 120/240Hz was implemented to counteract this LCD blur. A side effect though is that it can make film look more like "soap operas." The 600 Hz spec now being touted by plasma TV's is a direct marketing ploy to counteract the fact that people think they need 120/240 Hz TV's. When it comes to plasma, that spec doesn't exist so Panasonic came up with the 600 Hz spec that actually has nothing to do with refresh rate rather it deals with how plasmas produce color.

Forgot to mention- Always check out the TV's with some type of material you are familiar with. Try to calibrate the TV a little and then judge the image quality. Spec's are not everything. I've seen a Pioneer Kuros 720p plasma look incredible and better than many 1080p sets. It all comes down to image quality as a whole and what you are happy with.

You know, I was wondering about this the other day. I asked myself... "Why are they just now advertising the 600hz? Plasmas have been around for years." I guess it's like the "TrueHD" or "FullHD" stickers on all the 1080p TVs out there.

Unfortunately, these types of "features and specs" obviously sell units to consumers who are not educated and give sales people a way to upsell. I can see where plasma had to do something though as even though their picture quality can be superior, I can see someone ignoring what they see and saying they must have a "240Hz" TV.

Well just thought I'd let you guys know what we ended up with. It's a Samsung 46'' LCD @ 1080p 120hz...it's amazing, such an improvement over our old Sony 28'' box. Playing Killzone 2 is freaking amazing and I'm not noticing any sort of ghosting or anything just using the "gamer mode".

I owned a 46B550 and found it to be a blurry mess for gaming/cable/movies. Plus it had that annoying flickering on square patterns like mesh or building windows. Awful set, I returned it in 3-4 days and went with a KDL52V5100. Returned that as well because it was ugly. Now I own a 52B750 and am enjoying it.

Well we actually have the 46B640...so I don't know if they fixed the problems you had, but our picture looks great. Haven't tried a Blu-ray yet, but the PS3 and even normal DVDs look awesome!

I went with the Sony Bravia 46" W4000 because I found it on sale. Only 60hz, with 24Hz technology for Bluray. Looked excellent for picture quality. Also of note, many people recommend calibrating your new HDTV by a professional.

Bought a 360 not too long ago and now wish I could return the TV. Considering it's 1080p, the game picture is great, but text is hard to read in some games. Fallout3 I can't even see what I'm selecting in the pipboy menu. If I get up closer it's no problem. Maybe it's the TV, or I might need to get my eyesight tested.

The B640 is a different panel than the B550... The B750 is a different panel than the B640/B650 which share a panel. Your model has a tendency to push the color blue on everything, it drove me up the wall so it was not a factor in my decision.
