What are you into, and if your into alot, what are you NOT into?

I scrolled down your games list and I saw alot of variety, but I don't think I saw any RTS, but if you wanna get into it, basically, the only RTS games I like, are Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, and Supreme Commander, and the Total War series, everything else is just way too boring to me. World in Conflict was ok IMO. Alot of people will say great things about it, but, I just didn't like it, played it for about an hour and I just thought "meh".

F.E.A.R. is a really nice old one, hell, it doesn't even feel old, Condemned was made by monolith too, and I'd assume those games price tag is pretty low now.

Steam also has awesome prices, I end up buying things that I never even thought of getting (like psychonauts.) but when it was on Steam for like, 10 bucks, I just thought "eh why not?!" and now I love it! I was gonna get "Vampire the Masquerade" but I was low on cash this month lol.

I saw hitman contracts on your list, have you played blood money yet?

Of wow dude, it would take too much money and time to play through all the classics and great games, so I suggest to play through new ones, and old classics on the side. Too many games went through my mind when you asked for old good games :P

Well, this of course depends on your taste in genre and style. (how far back are you wanting to go) With older games everything seems to be oozing with an individualistic style not found in the mass marketed games of today. So, while the nostalgia for these titles may be immense, they seem to polarize a fanbase.

As far as first-person-shooters are concerned, I reccomend Deus Ex (first one only) ......other fps may be hard to appreciate after playing titles such as HL2 and Farcry/Crysis.

Rpgs are timeless if they have a decent story, Check out the Baldur's Gate and Fallout series as well as Planescape.

You could always play the time sink, click-fest, Diablo 2 . I've seen the set priced at an amazing $15.

While there are many classics you'll be hard pressed to find any in stores. Even of the ones I have listed D2 is the only title to commonly hold a shelf space. So I hope you have friends or like torrents.

Lol, seriously, I didn't want to name a bunch of games he wouldn't care about, but heck, you started late, but this is the BEST YEAR to start, if the pc was an actual console and not a custom system that most people own, it would probably get "console of the year". Is that an actual award?

Well since you're not interested in RTS or RPG, that helps narrow things down very smoothly. I cant give much info on Sports and Racing since im not that into it, although I do remember Need for Speed is a very nice car game :P (Should be very old too). As for FPS, I cant list em all as Im goin to bed now - do check this out and see/skim the good ones

If you're into Adventure games try some of the Monkey Islands and Grim Fandango but I'm not sure if they work on Windows XP.

DEUS EX(the first one!) A classic shooter that allows you to choose what kind of bad ass you want to be. It's very open-ended. You can be a sneaky sniper or a grenade lauching maniac. "The choice is yours and so are the consequences"

Half-Life 2 is also a classic shooter that you must play. There are a lot of other games I could name but those were the first that came to mind. And for a good reason.

A list of older FPS games that I consider essential:

half life - a great action scifi shooter with pretty awesome (at the time) ai, smooth combat with enemies that are just cool, and a lot of great cinematic-style (compared with the standards of the time) moments

half life 2 - a game which transends the genre 'fps', the actual shooting of it is almost incidental, this is a game where instead of just your location and enemies changing as you progress, the entire focus of gameplay changes, you're never doing the same thing too long, so it never stagnates - focus is not on gunplay as much as traditional fps games

escape from butcher bay - easily amongst the greatest games ever made, it merges many forms of gameplay (from shooting to stealthing to fisticuffs to roleplaying) into one neat package, and it handles every moment perfectly - another game which transcends the mere label 'fps'

call of duty 1 & 2 - i have not played 1, but i include it because the general consensus is it is better than 2, but i love 2! the games are high action ww2 run n gunnery with lots of enemies, and lots of ai allies, you almost never feel like a one man army, you're a cog in a machine - and that is more refreshing, and more awesome, than you can imagine before playing it

system shock 2 - a masterpiece that everyone should play

bioshock - a very inferior (but still great) update of system shock 2, retaining many of the elements that made shock 2 awesome, improving some, destroyingmost others

f.e.a.r - simply the best firefights you can have in a computer game, great visuals, the best ai ever, and slow motion

alien vs predator - if you love the aliens and/or predator franchise, you'll love this game - it's essentially a run n gun, stealther and horror game all rolled up into three awesome campaigns

no one lives forever -a very cool and often surprisingly funny first person shooter

doom compilation - set it to ultraviolence, grab your shotgun and rock - the reason we're here

operation flashpoint - extremely good and extremely realistic military shooter

deus ex - i personally [censored] this game, but i acknowledge it as a great achievement... try it, if you don't enjoy it, you lose a couple bucks, if you love it, it'll change your life

thief 1 & 2 - two games i also don't like, but they are super original and very cool stealth fps games

farcry - some astounding technology, a good degree of freedom and some fine gunplay in this unique jungle shooter

For old games I would definately suggest:

Maxis Sim City, Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon, Microprose F19 Stealth Fighter, SubLogic Flight Simulator and others. But, perhaps those are too old for you! In the late 80's, and early 90's those game provided many fun moments. Sim City and Railroad Tycoon are actually available for free these days.

The Monkey Islands and most (if not all) old LucasArts games run fine if you download ScummVM (I'm running them on Vista so will work on XP). As for Grim Fandango and the last Monkey Island, I'm not sure if you can find a copy that lets you install it onto your harddrive.

I'd recommend Deus Ex (either or both), STALKER, Guild Wars (if you have the attention span), Narbacular Drop (free!) and Counter Strike: Source.

I have great games that date back even to 1998.

I agree with everyone mentioning F.E.A.R

Also get Psychonauts, Prey, Quake IV, Painkiller, Max Payne 2, Max Payne, Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 and Call of Duty 2 and No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M's Way.

If you're also interested in older games, try Heretic II, Aliens vs. Preadator 2, Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force, Star Trek Elite Force 2, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division and Clive Barker's Undying.
