Need technical details about GPUs

Hellow fellow readers,

Can anyone tell me how the following plays a part in deciding a better GPU? Shader units, ROPs, Transistors, Core clock, Memory clock I'm not really interested in the definition of these terms. Its more of how important are these? I know there are others, like memory size and bus width, but it doesnt matter to me for now. So it would be nice if someone could list them in like a hierarchical list. e.g. is shader units more important than Rops, or vice versa

It's not that simple. All of those things come together to make a GPU perform the way it does, and there's no easy way to explain how those things relate to each other. The best advice that I can give you is to read a ton of reviews of GPUs from the last 3-4 years, and then draw your own conclusion. When a new GPU comes out, I can usually make a pretty good estimate of how it's going to perform relative to other cards, based on specs. But that comes from 12 years around graphics cards and gaming computers.

To make it even simpler- When new GPUs come out, start reading the reviews for each new model. You'll get a grasp on it and how all of the terms like ROP, memory bus, stream processors, cuda cores, etc.. all relate to each other across both AMD and Nvidia cards. Game testing and benchmarking is the only way to be 100% sure how a GPU will perform versus the competition. That's why we all read reviews.

You need a fatter bus width (256 or higher) to pump out data with a lot of fast memory that can take all that data (GDDR5) combined with plenty of raster backends for processing and shaders generally to provide good FPS. In other words, everything counts!

It's really a combination of a lot of things. There isn't one determining factor that makes or breaks a GPU, it's how the entire design and architecture works together as a whole.
