Yeah a duel core at x6800....or if price is a problem e6600. I would go with 2 gigs of ram, as the price for 2 woulden't hit you that much. Don't be too concerned with hard drvie size. A western digital at 10000 rpms is a beast. Oh and a geforce 8800gtx. For games the only processor which is above the rest is the x6800. Not even the qx6700 can compete. Its beaten on most benchmarks for games. Apparently there are price drops for Intel processors coming up. Not sure how much though. Of course this is top of the range but you did ask for whats fab for gaming.

Well if you wana overclock you can get a beast of a processor for a lower price. The core 2 duo is the proc to get something like the e4300 or e6400 and overclock them to what you want you should be able to get 2.6 very easily. DDR2 667 ram. 8800GTS/GTX. For motherboards get something like gigabyte ga-965p or Asus p5b.

If you don't want to overclock then get a e6700 or something.

Build it yourself.  It'll be much cheaper and with the money that you save, you can up the hardware.  If you can read a manual and follow directions carefully, you can build your own system.  The hardest part of building a system is making sure that all the parts are compatible.  And, as one viewer said, make sure you load XP on it as your operating system.  Vista is just too unstable at this time.

2 GIGs ONLY if its 2 x 1 gig and NOT 4 x 512!  If they are trying to sell you 4 x 512 you are getting screwed.  And do not waste money on vista now.  Just get XP.

There are many problems with Vista atm like Stalker and stuff, unless you are getting a DX10 card which you should, wait for vista. You should already have XP?

Yer for the moment Windows XP is better for gaming because there a bit to many incompatabilities with games on Vista at the moment. Also as processors go the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 performance per £/$ but obviously if you have the money to splash on it like the guy above said the X6800 is awesome although I swear by the QX6700 and just overclock. And as far as graphics cards go the 8800GTX is a good investment even if you can't use the DX10 ability its an amazing card as well as being futureproof.

yeah right now I'm on desktop pc, 80 gb Hdd , 256 mb ram, win xp, p4 2 ghz, ge force4 mx440 - 64mb ddr ram, , and it is so slow. i cant online game any more as it lags out so bad and i cant play any more of the total war series as it practically crashes and takes an age to load and real time battles are almost impossible now.

On april 3rd im getting a new 16mb cable put in under a new company, so my new pc must be like a rocket also so i can relax at least for about 2 years and game hardcore again. Ah i will be sking but it will be worth it.  many thanks for all your comments so far as its such a huge help. Im actually a noob when it comes to technology so all advice is really appreciated!

Hold your horse. I have 70 original games from anno1701, supremem commander, Stalker,Fear and hundreds of other games. And i have been able to install them all and play them all. True there is the odd tricky one. Xp's advantages is the Framerates as Xp is running quicker at the moment. But if you plunge for the fastest duel core or one of the latest quad cores the difference will be minimal. Think about the future of your pc. I uninstalled my XP as my 6800 shifts anything maxed out on Vista anyway. Yes it does have driver issues and a few glitches here and there but not enough to ditch it for a now dated O/S. If you buy a Quad core i would go with Vista hands down anyway as XP is not suited for multi-threading. Vista will thrive of it.

Interesting, could you tell me what a quad core is though? ive never heard of it. Everyone right now said the intel core 2 CPU is the best to have for gaming?. Apart from having vista for a quad core would i need to raise or buy anything else stat and spec wise to make the machine run amazingly?

whats stalker? GibboViper

Its a very good hardcore survival horror game of sorts.

At the moment its a little buggy but it should slowly get sorted with patch work. Heres a link to it: http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/action/stalker/index.html?q=stalker

Edit: Oh sorry hadn't refreshed in a few minutes and didn't realise someone had already answered.

Quad is 4 cores in 1 processor. And amazingly a 775 socket board will do the trick. Unlike the AMD FX which is 2 slots for 2 cores.... Very bulky. I really don't know what you want and how much you have. This is assuming you are getting an 8800 card. The only duel core which does rule the roost is a X6800. All other duel cores i woulden't bother with. For quad cores i would go with the Q6600 or the Q6700 and overclock them as you will hit 3.5Ghz if you do it right. I would go with nothing lower than 2.6ghz for your core. If you get any of these processors and an 8800 then i would choose vista.

Quad core is... well basicaly four processor cores rather than one of two. Quad cores are great if the game/program is optimised for them but if not you might have some problems. For example, Rainbow Six Vegas isn't optimised for multi core processors and it requires a processor of atleast 3GHz, but if you have a 2.4GHz dual core its actually a faster processor than a 3GHz single core but the game is only using one core causing that single core to work other time because its only 2.4GHz. But its hard to explain because at the same time its wrong to say a dual core 2.4GHz is the equivilent to 4.8GHz because thats not the way it works, it works as 2.4GHz twice, which probably sounds confussing because I can't find a better way to describe it. But if you want a quad core like the QX6700 then you'll have to shop around because I know some motherboards have incompatability problems with quad core processors, namely the Asus Striker Extreme. As far as trying to get your computer to run well just try and make sure your parts are very compatably with eachother. Maybe once you've got a list of the parts you want, post it back on here and see what people say.

Many thanks again and i will post their suggestions back here before buying to make sure it all checks out. Best regards,
