i was just wondering, would something like this : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822108042 would i be able to access my files on my desktop from my laptop? i will only be doing this in my house, and my house is 2 storeys..... would this work?

I dont see why it wouldnt work. But if your going to store music, films and work on it permanently I would look into a 2 bay NAS and run RAID. This will insure that if one hdd fails the other will still contain your stuff.

If you want to just move data between a laptop and a pc, why not homegroup them? Or buy a portable HDD?

Just to share files from your desktop to laptop you'd just have to have desktop on and sharing on. The would work as a network drive you could put files on to share extra storage with all computers on your network. Or I have a netgear router with a usb port on it I can hook any external USB drive to it and share that way.
