In my humble opinion... YES. MMORPGs aren't so popular because of a long acronym, they're fun! Of course different gamers have different tastes, so I suggest you try out a free one before putting money into a good one, and there are plenty of free MMORPGs. There are many different kinds, fantasy, sci-fi, even some MMOFPS's out there. A lot of them simply have no depth, and are just a grind to level, which I don't personally find fun, but hey, Koreans are crazy. You should check out RF Online and Tantra Online for some good free MMO's.

Why the heck not?

Because playing one will cost me the same that 4 games a year do, which means I will miss out on a lot of games."I've never played a racing game, should i try one?"

Yes, you should give lots of games a chance.
A good one to try is Runescape, simple controls and... Highly addictive, Updated quite often (Around once a week I think.). Only problems would be higher lvl players that treat you like dirt. Also, its got a free version and a Pay to Play version. Also, I hated it when I first got on, but after playing it a little more, I've ended up playing it for close to 5 years with enjoyment(On members server). But, that's just my opinion.

You don't have to play it for the rest of your life. After a couple of months, you should know how you feel about the game, the first month is usually free. WOW was cool to me for about 2-3 months, then it got boring to me because of the grinding and repetitive FEDEX quests. I am glad I played it, and am glad I don't play it anymore.
If you think you will like a game which involves socialising, teamwork, and building up your character over a long period of time I would say go for it. Current MMOs which I would recommend are:
- Eve Online (huge space-based MMO)
- Guild Wars (free fantasy MMO - focuses on PvP)
- World of Warcraft (fantasy MMO - one of the best)
- Tabula Rasa (newish FPS sci-fi MMO)
All of them have a free trial except for Guild Wars I think. There is a ton of new MMOs scheduled to come out over the next couple of years. The most anticipated would be Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, and Pirates of the Burning Sea.
If you have a lot of time to spend, sure.
But if you have a job to hold down.... Absolutly NO!!!! (Especially if you play WoW)
Starts either with World of Warcraft, City of Heroes or Guild Wars. They would all be a decent introduction to the genre, and they are all easy to get started.Anofalye
I wouldn't consider Guild Wars a MMO. It's an online RPG that uses a multiple room lobby system, not a world where thousands inhabit at the same time per server.

Guild Wars is the only decent one of the bunch. Unles you like PAYING to repetatively press the same buttons each month. Monthly fees are a rip off, and signing your life over to a game is retarded. Trust me, Guild Wars is so much better than WoW or any of its clones.

Not even close. Guild Wars is basically a Diablo 2 clone where it forces you to buy every expansion to even make use of the only decent feature, which is PvP, otherwise you lack the skill sets to even compete. The quest portion is so mindblowingly boring that I couldn't beat it despite the low level cap. Add to the fact that character customization is damn near nonexistent and I couldn't see myself bothering with the game. By the way, I own both Prophecies and Factions.
It seems that you weight monthly fees quite a bit when it comes to the worth of Online RPGs. However, to say that one game is better than the other solely because of the lack of fees while ignoring the inherit flaws of the game's design is downright misleading.

Any of its clones? And I thought people weren't that ignorant anymore.
You are most likely subscribed to a magazine or at least don't think there's nothing wrong with it. How is that any different? Both magazines and MMO's are services. You could buy a new magazine every month or you could buy a new issue of the same magazine. MMO's are frequently updated, so they work the same way. Monthly fees secure great servers, frequent updates and great customer service, except Blizzard, they can afford to loose few customers.

Well, for starters, magazines don't have initiation fees to start a subscription (buying WoW). But more significantly, when you buy those magazines, they're yours to keep and read again anytime afterward. You forever own them. MMO fees only allow you to play for the months you've paid for.
An MMO fee is more comparable to paying for cable or satellite, which unless you really aren't a TV person, is very worth the price. But television isn't something people like me feel a need to own, whereas games are. I won't buy a game unless it then becomes mine forever. Granted, there are other reasons I personally wouldn't play MMO's, but the point I'm making is that any kind of game that had a monthly fee is a game I would not buy, because games are not capable of being worth a monthly fee in my eyes, absolutely no matter how good they are, how they justify the fees, or how much they add because of the fees.
You seemed the miss the whole point. We are paying for a new isssue, not the same magazine.
And please, change your avatar. That must be the most annoying thing ever.
RK-Mara
No, you're paying for both the new issue and the old ones. The new one could never be good enough to make me stop being pissed off that I'm having to pay to get the old ones back, and only for a limited time just like before.
And I agree, that avatar freaks me out.
MMOs can be very enjoyable depending on which one you try. I would recommend:
World of Warcraft
Guild Wars
Shadowbane (This will be a hard one to get into)
Everquest 2
Dungeons and Dragons Online.
You may be seeing less and less of the outdoors if you take one up seriously. ;)
Peoples deep into arguing about MMOs might want to give a try to Saga of Ryzom, should keep you busy for a few! :P Instead of saying GW is a MMO or not, or that GW is the only proper form of payment or not...this one is different, and definitely not for the nubs. It is most likely closing doors soon unless it get players, so...might be your last chance to see the closest thing to what a Rolemaster MMO would have been like...as I doubt any more devs would go that way.
Everquest 1 & 2, DAoC, Lineage 1 & 2...would be my recommendations only if you want MORE of an aspect in World of Warcraft, but honestly, you should try WoW first and then if you want more raiding, EQ. If you want more RvR, DAoC. If you want more grind in open PvP, Lineage, if you want more of about everything PvE, EQ2...but hard to say what you want more off before you play WoW, unless you are knowing your tastes already. Also, you may want to consider EvE, Asheron Call, Ultima, Horizons (dragon-players), Tabula Rasa, Mabinogi, Runescape...I mean...there are soo many out there.
lets let yahtzee tell you. heres an example
". . . A set of red flags came up that brought me to a serious realization: one-click combat, endless drudging from place to place, quests involving killing x amount of monster y for lazy stationary ****head zed, This is a mumorpuger!"
Lord of the Rings Online is the best MMORPG out there right now for true.CheeChee_Macko
I don't agree with you, I found the combat system, in-game economy and trade/crafting system to be broken and boring after a few weeks. Not to mention LOTRO and DDO are pretty much the same as Guild Wars, minus monthly fees.

OK, NOW, WHATS THE DEAL WITH YAHTZEE?
No, but, seriously, it seems like everyone's quoting or posting about him, its nearly a meme by now. Ive known about Yahtzee and his reviews for some months, and I didnt bother people about it, nor did I thought it was cool to quote him.
You may ask me to "chill out", but you cant erase the infamy you brought upon yourself by quoting an "internet celebrity" on gamespot, one thats been out for months, BTW. BE ORIGINAL, AND STOP THINKING NO ONE HAS SEEN HIS VIDEOS WHEN EVERYONE ON HERE TALK ABOUT THEM.
Thank you, have a nice day.
Try Eve On-line 14 day trial they just updated the graphics and have been continually putting in expansions for free.
Very PVP oriented and and everyone plays on the same server, no experience grinding skills are gained whether on or off-line. I think some one once estimated that to have all the skills it was like a 100 real years.
Eh, whats with all the mmo haters out today. To each his own, and if you find a good game the monthly fee is most definitely worth it (oh no 1-2 hours of work a MONTH to pay for hours and hours and hours of gameplay) I really loved DAoC in its prime, and enjoyed EVE, CoH and WoW for a while. And the thing that makes mmos fun are the PEOPLE, playing a mmo like its a SP game is not the way to get the most enjoyement out of it. And thats not to say I play mmos that much anyways. I'd say I've only actively subscribed to an mmo about 1/3 of the time, which works very well for me. Just waiting to see if WAR will bring back some of that DAoC sparkle I miss so much.
You should at least give mmos a try. I'd recommend Wow, CoH/V and LotRO if you haven't played any before and I believe they all have free trials.
Give wow a shot. I hate MMO before I played it 2 years ago. I played for a full year and a half. Made alot of friends and had tons of fun. Stopped because of time commitments though.
Trust me, the haters have never played the game. It is very good
In all honesty, I would say don't even bother with a MMO. They may be fun at the start, but with all the time you spend in the game(only to have a new MMO replace it in a few years)
You could be doing something productive. I would start to list them off, but I'm pretty sure you can find better things to do with 40 hours a week then play a crappy video game with millions of people.
All MMOs are the same, quest grind and pvp which takes not much skill and its only who has the better gear.
Just my opinion...
You dont know what you are missing, the adrenaline of the moment as you are raceing over 200mph, there is nothing else like it."I've never played a racing game, should i try one?"

The worst things about MMOs:
- Harder to unsintall then a regular game. Often there is no uninstall option, it often has share programs with other on your PC...
- They will advertise you a LOT about the new cool stuff.
- They will always try to interest new players, but always by shafting old players, smoother XP curves (without giving anything to the peoples who earn it the hard way), free goodies, less fees and much more.
I am used to be catered too if I stick a long time as a customer...not to be placed in the backroom and see them give me my stuff. :(

So play a free MMORPG like Sword of the New Coast or something like that...
If youre goin to try a free mmorpg.
Prepare for hours of countless grinding, most free mmorpg dont contain so much, quests, events during your lvling. But some games can be GREAT once you climb over that tall wall of grinding :P I started to reach the ending of Fly for fun as knight. Very fun...till i forgot my password. Its a hobby for me to try free mmorpg, most of them are great games, but can be a pain in the ass couse of the grinding you have to walk thru to reach the good content in the game.
World of warcraft is recommended for newbies, 1-70 lvls only wich gives you the opportunity to get in the game early, with instances and quests.
Btw, check out Fiesta Online, I think its pretty good, havent played since beta, but nice graphic, nice gameplay, and QUEST, omg yes :D
