yep, get the GOTY edition and congratulate yourself for being smart. :D the game has its flaws - relatively shallow charater building, lackluster storyline and dialogues, etc - but overall it's very entertaining.
Why would you ask complete strangers about a game? There are also plenty of reviews on the game as well, It's a great game pick it up and make sure you get the Goty edition.Hey ive never played fallout 3 and all my friends say its awsome so im thinking of getting it , just wanted to see your views on it.

Your not missing much. I found the gameplay to be too slow and boring. Story was good and the atmosphere was good to look at. But IMHO its the gameplay that ruined it. Not my cup of tea.
Leave room in your budget to grab the DLC because if you get started, you will probably get hooked

The world itself is strong but the game play is not. It fails as a shooter and an RPG. biggest_loser
Yes - that's why the average score from 13,000 Gamespot users is a 9.0
Fallout 3 is one of the best RPGs of the decade - make sure to get the GOTY version.

Well he was right about it failing as a shooter. There is no doubt about that. Gunplay mechanics were terribly done.[QUOTE="biggest_loser"]The world itself is strong but the game play is not. It fails as a shooter and an RPG. Born_Lucky

I'm entitled to my opinion. Do you really want me to say at the beginning of each post "Say guys, I believe that...." The combat is highly repetitive, with poor enemy AI. The RPG system is terribly contrived and unbalanced.Didn't get very far before I quit. Game play killed it for me. Story was good up to that point. I just couldn't take the crappy fighting system.
Sorry, but calling a GOTY a failure - is simply a lie.
One of the most addicting games I've ever played.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this, however it is kind of disappointing that no one else saw this within the game. Definitely not GoTY.Didn't get very far before I quit. Game play killed it for me. Story was good up to that point. I just couldn't take the crappy fighting system.

Having spent hundreds of hours playing it, I must say: you should definitey install these mods:
FWE: Fallout Wanderers Edition
MMM: Martigen Mutant Mod
WMK: Weapon Mod Kits
and Fellout.
Those mods make the game as it should be: incredibly immersive and much more realistic.
Yes you are right! Sorry everyone but I am just a liar!! Barabbas! Barabbas! Crucify him! Crucify him!Sorry, but calling a GOTY a failure - is simply a lie.

Do any of them fix the crappy combat system? Having a bullet not fly out of my gun almost perfectly straight is moronic. As the game stands I put my crosshair over the enemies head and boom the bullet files way to the right. Regardless of the games quality, popularity does not equate to quality. But hey, that is obvious isn't it.[QUOTE="Lithos_"]Do any of them fix the crappy combat system? I bought it on day one and shelved it after a few hours of playing. Didn't play it till 2 years later when there were a bunch of mods that fix the game play as well as other things. The combat system is fine. Why does every game have to have the same exact combat? It's not an fps.
It's either a love/hate type of game. I reccomend it though.

Your accuracy increases as you level, if you put points into your marksmanship (small guns, big guns). It makes sense in an rpg setting. And it is similar to real life. If you've ever shot a real gun, you must know that you have to learn the recoil and weight of an individual gun before you become an ace marksman with that particular weapon. This is because every gun has a different feel and accuracy variance. You don't just pick up a gun in real life and become Clint Eastwood.
In this respect, I think Fallout 3 does a decent job of leveling your marksmanship skills. Granted, the gunplay isn't the same as a great fps...but it's not meant to be. Typically, you're just dropped off in a bad situation and have to shoot your way out in an fps...you automatically start as a proficient marksman. An fps has no character development.Role playing games are different. The whole point to role playing games is to build a custom character with the skill sets you desire. You are not automatically handed God-like powers in a role playing game. You have to level and assign skill points.
And...Fellout is a great mod.

Definitely not RPG of the decade. FO3 was a very poor rpg imo. Especially since broken steel which killed the rpg aspects of the game.
Still a fun game though.
Problem is the game does a terrible job with its mechanics in showing your marksmanship, compared to lets say RPG shooters like Deus Ex, less intrusive and more visible signs of improvement and skill (and you aren't useless from the start if you use the weapon carefully). Its a very similar problem to what Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines had, where you would put pistol to someones head, at point blank, pull the trigger, only to have the invisible dice rolls decide that you miss completely making real time shooting feel out of place and useless - breaking player agency. Giving player such real time control really doesn't gel with the stats modifiers. Even if its supposed to represent you 'gaining experience' with firearms it doesn't work at all with the shooter mechanics and information given onscreen in realtime combat. Imho would have been better if the game expanded on VATS, perhaps as complex as it is in Fallout Tactics, and kept it 'slow mo realtime' rather than turn based (that people would inevitably complained about). Problem is when you put gunplay mechanics and systems into your game with a degree of emphasis on it, then it is open to criticism for it. But hey games like Mass Effect improved substantially on it after a rocky start.Your accuracy increases as you level, if you put points into your marksmanship (small guns, big guns). It's basically Oblivion but you're in a nuclear wasteland. The main difference between Oblivion in this is the game has an extremely cheap "ability" called VATS. Lets say you're exploring the countryside. Normally you have to put points into perception which allows you to spot enemies faster. Nope, with VATS you can pan around while traversing the countryside and VATS will target enemies on the other side of the map. Equip your sniper rifle or lazer and you can take all kinds of free shots while the enemy is beyond normal vision.
Let say you're exploring a sewer come around the corner and oops you're looking at a Deathclaw. Normally this would mean death. Oh wait you can stop all time and click VATS, target its face for three shots to the head with some kind of heavy weapon and most likely splatter it.
Lame, lame, lame.
Its like having a God ability at the click of a button.
Health get low ? Oh you can access your PIP Boy (Inventory) and stop all time and heal to full. LAME.
Fallout fanboys will come back with WAAAAH it was in Fallout 1 & 2, and it was lame there too. They'll also say, its an option you don't have to use it.
They should've made VATS an ability you gain at high level, one that can only be used briefly. They should also have made it so the PIP Boy (inventory) cannot be accessed while in combat.
Other then that its a good game.
Alright, if you don't like VATS, don't use it. Ditto for pipboy in combat. I agree it takes a bit away from the realism, but the game was never meant to be highly realistic in the first place. It's like a fantasy game for the most part. My two cents are that the game rocks, one of the best games I've ever played. I bought it for the PC and it was such a glitchy piece of **** for that that I bought a 360 just for that game! If RPGs are your thing, I'd definitely suggest getting that. What is it now, like 20 bucks? Heard it's a platinum hit. Goddamn, I bought it for like 3 times that. GREAT GAME.It's basically Oblivion but you're in a nuclear wasteland. No they won't, what Fallout 3 lacked was the ability to break arms and legs and that was really the whole point for the Vatts thing. Fallout isn't the same with that removed. In Fallout 3, limbs just fly off after they die, which amounts to nothing more than eyecandy.
