Accoring to this, the Starcraft universe will be revisited in the future, but the game being announced on May 19th may be Diablo 3 or another game.

Think about it, with Hellgate: London coming out and being dubbed the next "Diablo" game, i'm sure the folks at Blizzard are not gonna stand by while heir former employees develop a diablo-esq game. I still think Hellgate wil be a better game....

I absolutely agree.  Hellgate: London is the absolute most anticipated game for me this year.  It has so much potential...

One reason I think HG:L will be better is Diablo III most likely continue along with the original story line.  I don't think this is a bad thing, but HG:L deffinetly offers a fresh story and unique environment.  Plus, as you already said, it's from the developers of Diablo...this already gives them an advantage...

Hmmm... a diablo 3 website saying its D3...

The reply from blizzard was a little misleading if you don't think about it hard enough. They said they have no plans to announce anything (starcraft related) at present. and a new game announcement will come on the 19th.

Think about it... present refers to the time they replied. They obviously aren't going to say "hey you guys got it, its (insert game here). They are going to pretty much deny what game it is until THEY announce it on the 19th.

I believe they mean "present" as in anytime soon.

It probably is something to do with the Diablo series, which I don't care about as I've never played either of the 2 previous Diablo games.

I dont think Blizzard is going to continue with the Diablo franchise, cause im sorry but all the employees that made Diablo, Diablo are working at FlagShip Studios now and they are working on a game that will be as popular as the Diablo series (lets hope nothing screws this up) nowadays blizzard is only concentrating on that damnable WoW, or developping a Starcraft game... all in due time tho, all in due time!

I will reserve judgement on whether or not Hellgate: London will be a better game than Diablo III.  Even with most of the original developers leaving to create Hellgate: London we know for certain that Blizzard is a company that will continue to make great games, for example WOW.  I know one things is for sure, I will probably end up buying both of them, and take them both for what they are worth.  I also will seriously be tested when Hellgate comes out, to whether it is worth upgrading to Vista and to a Direct X 10 videocard, we shall see.

I already made a well informed thread with blizzards reply but I guess people feel the need to keep posting these threads with uninformed people bantering about random **** Why not just keep it in the thread that has a lot more information than this one?

I don't think so. I think more likely they would say:

"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more."

If the rumoured game was the game they were going to be unveiling they wouldn't say they have plans to revisit the universe at some point in the future, but nothing at present. They would allude to to the event on the 19th. That way they wouldn't confirm anything, but they also wouldn't deny.

You don't think they have stuff about StarCraft 2 sitting around their office? Of course they do, and they have plans to make another StarCraft game sometime, just not right now. There's no other way to say that except for the way they've put it in the quoted paragraph.

"HG:L deffinetly offers a fresh story and unique environment"

yeah it's nothing at all like the massive catastrophic demon invasion that's the hallmark of the Diablo series, or the alien invasion in a future/contemporary dystopia as in Half-Life 2

it's as fresh and exciting as belf rogues from space

I wonder how some of you can say hellgate will be a better game if you havent heard anything official of diablo 3 at all...

sure, hellgate looks great and might top d2, but you never know what blizzard can pull it off, specially with their kind of budget (thanks to wow)

Well, I sort of disagree. We know nearly nothing about Diablo III--heck, it may not even be on the drawing board, let alone have a story or development team to criticize. Hearing you guys speculate is like hearing someone compare the 2007 Boston Red Sox to the 2010 Lubbock Cowpokes.

Actually, to be accurate, since no one here has spent any serious time with Hellgate either, it's more like comparing the Boston Red Sox of this Fall with the 2010 Lubbock Cowpokes.

Vintage Gamespot fanboy chatter, no offense.

It's funny, I remember when I played Diablo waaaay back. And back then, I thought to myself " Dude...A futuristic Diablo would own," and now we get HG:L. :-D I'm incredible!!!

I highly doubt D3 will live up to my own standards, personally, I just lost all faith in them after WoW and the putting off the new Star Craft. What BS.

I for one would love to see a Starcraft MMO announced. What better a setting then the Starcraft world with its story and lore to create a successful FPSMMORPG.

all the starcraft sites are going, ohhh, uh, yeah, starcraft 2 is gonna be announced!

and all the diablo sites are going, no, they got it wrong, it's diablo 3!!!!

websites rely on traffic, they're probably making the rumours up themselves to generate interest in their own websites

it's a near certainty that blizz is working on diablo 3 and starcraft 2, as well as an entire army of developers devoted to world of warcraft, and probably another team working on another mmo - blizzard is a very big company, they don't need to work on one thing at a time

personally, i think it's gonna be a starcraft game - probably starcraft 2 rather than another MMO - but when blizz puts out another mmo (and it will), i expect it to be set in the starcraft world rather than a new ip

diablo 3 will surely be coming, but if blizz knows what's best for them, they'll let the dust settle on hellgate before they try to compete - because they can't go toe to toe with hellgate, even if they make killer sales, it'll damage their rep bigtime when the juxtaposition puts hellgate far ahead - and if there's one thing blizzard relies on now more than ever, it's its reputation

almost definitely starcraft 2

If it is Diablo III it's not going to compete with Hellgate.

Think about it. After Blizzard announces a title the game is still going to be like a year away from release.
And anyone who has ever waited for a Blizzard game knows that they are always delayed.

And another thing.
Diablo II was released in 2000. Blizzard North (the developers of Diablo) got merged with Blizzard HQ in 2003(?). What where Blizzard North working on in that period? Diablo 3 most likely...
What ever it was got moved down to Blizzard. And some of the people that moved with probably continued with it.

So after WoW got released they probably got their programmers over on this project, and the other ones they've mentioned.
But this one had a head start.

So I would guess it's Diablo 3 and that StarCraft 2 is still in the works.

Knowing our luck it will probably be a new WoW expansion! :P

What will be sooo good about hell gate london? Kohanku

the game is taking the character development of diablo 2 and advancing it with randomised and custom skills and abilities

the game is (by the look of things, successfully) merging rpg and fps for the first time ever - appealing to fans of both genres without alienating either at any step

the game has a very cool setting - the gothic feel of destroyed london and holy knights battling against demons coupled with the high technology of the future is going to be a very cool contrast, science fantasy hasn't really been done well outside of warhammer 40k, especially not in games - hellgate could be the birth of one of the coolest roleplaying/game universes in a long time

the game is beautiful looking and 3D - something we've never really had before in a hack n slasher... and it looks like flagship has expertly handled the transition to 3D, making none of the presumably expected sacrifices

hellgate is really the definition of a good evolution of a genre - it doesn't really try and break new ground by doing anything crazy or new - it's just taking a lot of very cool, existing ideas and styles and putting them all together - new? not really - original? no way

but the new speartip of the evolution of the genre? sure

i don't agree - every hack n slasher rpg that's come out in the last half decade has competed with diablo 2... hellgate will be competing with diablo 2... hell, even diablo 3 will be competing with diablo 2 - even if diablo 3 becomes out two years after hellgate, i'd bet it'd still have to compete directly with hellgate (this, of course, presupposes that hellgate is better than diablo 2) - and the more time they put between hellgate and diablo 3, the easier it will be to go toe to toe...

And another thing.
Diablo II was released in 2000. Blizzard North (the developers of Diablo) got merged with Blizzard HQ in 2003(?). What where Blizzard North working on in that period? Diablo 3 most likely...
What ever it was got moved down to Blizzard. And some of the people that moved with probably continued with it.therog2

i don't pay much attention to blizzard's innerworkings, or any other company for that matter, so i can only speculate - but what i have read suggests this to be true, blizzard north was forced to work on "a blizzard north type project", while wanting to make something new - and that caused the split... but there's nothing to prove that it was diablo 3... world of warcraft has more in common with diablo than any blizzard titles

So after WoW got released they probably got their programmers over on this project, and the other ones they've mentioned.
But this one had a head start.

So I would guess it's Diablo 3 and that StarCraft 2 is still in the works.

as for having the headstart - that doesn't mean much, whatever work was done in and before 2003 was probably canned or the world of warcraft technology has surpassed it and would make a more appropriate game base to work from - not to mention the fact that blizzard has over 1600 employees, so full blown work could easily happen on several games concurrently, or years of work (of a relatively small team) could be duplicated in a much shorter period of time

i don't mean to pick you apart or anything, but you're just blindly speculating based on halfway-reasonable guesswork (same as everyone else, i guess) - for what it's worth, though, i hope you're right - i'd rather play diablo 3 than starcraft 2... every time i see starcraft i just think bad warhammer 40k clone

Plus, as you already said, it's from the developers of Diablo...this already gives them an advantage...

lokstah

I couldn't agree with you more.

Well that is why I said "likely".  No one know for sure...but I would call it more of an educated guess.  Do you remember how Diablo II  left off?  It's obvious they were (at least back then) planning on continuing the story.  So I wouldn't say we know nothing, we know they at one point did want to further the story.  So it's not as uneducated as you suggest.

The comment about the developers being the same ones from Diablo is accurate and meaningfull.  It does not suggest that HG:L is an automatic success becuase of this, but it certainly shows promise.

And no, it's not like "comparing the Boston Red Sox of this Fall with the 2010 Lubbock Cowpokes.".  We know a great deal about HG:L, and the only thing we have compared with Diablo III is some things that are likely implementations in the game (continuation of the story).

And I don't think it "fanboy chatter" at all.  It wasn't "omg HG:L rules!!!  Diablo III will sux!".  It was a generalized statement of opinion, based on some facts and likely developments.

"Vintage Gamespot fanboy chatter, no offense."

Vintage Gamespot trolling, no offense

You talking about the Diablo II ending or Lord of Destruction?
D2 had a very open ending, but LoD didn't. (In my opinion)

*Spoilers*
It's not very obvious how they will continue the story after LoD. All the brothers are killed and theirs soul stones destroyed.
Pluss the world stone that the soul stones where made from too, since Bahl corrupted it.

Or was there some hint in the story line that I can't remember...?

Actually...you are correct.  I was thinking more about Diablo II, not so much LOD.  To tell you the truth...I dont really remeber how LOD ended.  So I guess if they decided to go off from LOD (most likely scenario), it would be hard to judge how they would proceed.

Although I still don't think they will deviate to far from fantasy good vs evil setting.  With swords sheilds and magic set in a medieval type world.  They could surpris us though...maybe make it in the modern age.  Who knows...

the story of HGL is incredibly dull, instead of making it human vs demons they had to put a "chosen one" who will save everybody in there, why dont they bring back star wars while theyre at it

Well...that of course is your opinion.  I don't mind these cliche type stories.  It's just a game and whatever makes it believable is fine for me.

And anyways, do you have access to the full story?  I think it's a little premature to call it dull when you only know a very generalized summary of it.  We have no idea what twists, surprises, and the full details of the the story and side stories exists.

It's kinda like hearing the story for Braveheart as "outnumbered rebels fight tyranical power".

Wooo...dull right?  But if we actually watch the movie, there is waaay more involved then simply that.

When you take into account the fact that if Blizzard released a new Starcraft, half of S.Korea's population would buy it within one week of release, you can pretty safely assume that Blizzard has the business sense to do a new Starcraft.

Then again, you could probably say the same about Diablo III (and include a good portion of China's population also), so who knows.

I don't understand why people are hyping Hellgate: London  to be a Diablo game... I don't know much about the game but from what ive seen its  FPS!! roleplaying game. I don't see how you can compare it to diablo when its a fps. IMO the fps aspect ruined this game and there should of not been any guns .

you must've been very selective in your viewing then - only 1 class archetype (out of three (or more?)) is fps oriented - there is a melee oriented class group and a magic oriented class group, saying hellgate is a fps is like saying diablo is a ranged-oriented game because of the bowazon

you will surely be able to play the game without ever using a gun, just like you could play diablo 2 without ever using a ranged weapon - they're just using it as a focus point for marketing because we've never had a hack n slash rpg with fps elements like this before, it's an obvious grab for fans of the fps and rpg genre...

O Ok thx for clearing that up. If that's the case, I'm highly anticipating this game since Ive been waiting for a diablo like game. Should be cool to see how they balance the game and implement the fps aspect.

Ya thats a big issue the dev's have been dealing with, although they have been rather tight lipped in how they will implement balance.
