It's everyones favourite time, it's new build time! Looking for your opinions on the following combo:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.50GHz 6MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor

OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2

Asus P5K-E WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Coolermaster Real Power 520w Modular Power Supply

Using an Asus 8800GT from my old rig.

Suggestions? I'm upgrading from a two year old:

Athlon X2 3800

2GB DDR 400

8800GT

400w PSU

I wont be doing any overclocking at first, maybe in a few months.

How much of an improvement do you think I'll see, FPS wise, I'm not bothered about an extra zero on my 3DMark score :P

Thanks..

Q6600 overclocks better. you will hit an FSB limit very quickly with the Q9300 due to the 7.5x multiplier (generally, as a rough guide, 400fsb is the simple limit.. not saying you can't go higher, just it miiight take some effort (probably will)). if you're not into OCing however, go with the 9300. if you ARE into OCing the Q6600 is a LOT cheaper, with more potential power..

decent RAM, can't complain

for the motherboard, i'd go with any Gigabyte P35, there the best for the pricerange, most probably better than that ASUS.

PSU should be fine.

you'll see PLENTY of FPS. no disappointment. not to mention doing anything non-gaming will be verrrryyy much faster :)

Nice Build. Although I would personally get the Q9450 since it has double the L2 of the Q9300. However the Q9450 is on backorder for a few months at most if not all realtors. Also try to get a Corsair Power Supply since they have the highest efficiancy of any power supplys.

Its a good start but make these changes

get this motherboard http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-100-GI its cheaper and better

get this ram http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-090-CR its a tad more but should be better for overclocking

get this powersupply http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-005-CS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= coolmaster makes very hit or miss powersupplies i would hardly consider them good quality the crosair is very very well built and very reliable

As for processor if you want to save money you can buy E2180 and overclock it to 3ghz easy giving you all the speed you really need. Compared to a quad core the performce increase won't be much, once you get to a certain speed regardless if its quad or dual your pretty much set

hehe, i held back from pimping a HX620... like mine.. ;).. in thinking.. get one, try finding an article which doesn't give it honors.

HX520, also good.

and i still suggest getting Q6600 IF overclocking.

oh. more posts.

motherboard, i'd suggest the DS3P or DS3R. both cheaper. both better (and better than the L too.. think alphabetically :P)

E8xxx?, stick with quadcore.

and why didn't i think of suggesting crucial.. it's what i normally do :-

What about the E8XXX series of processors?

Ive been here just not as much and as for the E8400 its a great processor that can overclock very well but its not that much cheaper than the processor he listed and is actually more expensive than the Q6600. The reason I recommend him the E2180 is because the E8400 is 3x the price and the diference between the E8400 @4.0ghz and the E2180 @3-3.2ghz wouldn't be worth 3x the price not in the least bit

Hmm thanks for the tips on the gigabyte board, the DS3L is quite a bit cheaper than the asus, and will overclock as well you say? The gigabyte naming system isn't exactly clear on the differences between the models, could someone explain what the differences between the DS3P, DS3L, DS3R and the P35C-DS3R and DS4 are!! The descriptions are all very simiar apart from mentioning crossfire support for a couple of models, but that doesnt explain why there are 5 boards all with very different prices, very confusing.

Uh the crossfire does explain why those boards are more expensive crossfire means you have 2x pci xpress slots so you can have 2 of the same ati cards running at once thats going to make it cost alot more as for the others most are revisions that havn't dropped there price since there release the DS3L is a very nice board with great overclocking abillites go with that

looks like I'll go for the DS3L then. Ill see if I can squeeze in a Q9450 with the money saved from the asus board and the cash I got paid yesterday for selling bottles of WKD to drunken idiots ;) . Will I have to do a BIOS flash to get the new 45nm quad to boot do you know?
