The new Catalyst drivers were released today...sorry can't link for some reason.

Do you have to get rid of the old drivers first?albi321I've been wondering the same thing. Ever since they introduced the "No Reboot" feature of 8.6 they never specified if you just install the new ones over the old ones. I myself didn't take chances and just used the ATI uninstall utility first.
Hey albi321 LOL :) Now that superferret2029 is one hilarious hardware analyst. I had to read it twice to put it all together. LOL This made my day :)dynapl
It made my day too! Fanboys annoy the hell out of me most of the time, but sometimes they're just so damn funny... PS3's GPU= 8800 GTX SLI? That gave me a good laugh, that and the last few sentences where he says the other guy has no experience in hardware.

Haha I literally loled after first reading it.[QUOTE="JP_Russell"]Anybody know if it fixes the fans? Anybody at all?
Elann2008
What was the problem with the fan before? Was it making a weird noise? If so, the answer is YES. It did fix the fan because the noise is gone after I downloaded the hotfix.
No, the cards ran absurdly hot because the drivers wouldn't make the fan spin as fast as it was supposed to on either the 4850 or 4870 (most review sites were showing 80C idle, 100+C load). Not hotter than they could handle, but still hotter than I would ever care to have inside my case. The drivers at the time had no support for Rivatuner, either. There's a fix where you manually force the fans to spin at a faster rate constantly, and various hardware forums showed that the increased fan speeds got the cards down to typical GPU temps. But I'd still like to see ATI fix this themselves (the cards never should have shipped with such a stupid error present in the first place, really), and I'm just wondering if they've done so yet.

But idle temp was still 80C, and I maxed overclocked it and it only went up to 85C without any problems. Elann2008
The fan fix will lower the temps considerably, to around 50C idle and 60C under load. It's on my sig but if you want more details Wesker made a guide.

I downloaded the hotfix, 8.7 catalyst and driver and it still idled at 80C. :( I'll check out that guide.

So they haven't fixed it then?
Damn it, ATI...

Nope. :( We'll have to do the fanfix. And Rivatuner doesnt detect the HD4870. I tried. :(

The HD4870 (not too sure about the HD4850) idles and loads at 80C.
The fan was setup so that no one could hear it while keeping the GPU at or below 80C, at least during full load.
It's not really an error, as ATI tests the cards for failures at much higher temperatures, but it is annoying to have your GPU idling at 80C.
The heat "issue" during idle is most likely due to ATI's PowerPlay supposedly not working. I'm not 100% sure on the reason given, but it does make sense when you think about it (why would the GPU stay at 80C at both idle and full load?).

Well, not all people have gotten that. I remember reading in one of the first threads on a hardware forum that told how to do the fan fix, several posters said they used to get 70- to 80-something idling, 90- to 100-something on load with their 4870's. Anandtech's review of the 4850 showed it at 80C idle, 97 load (edit: actually, it wasn't Anandtech that said that, let me search for who it was; edit 2: hmm, can't find it, but it was on one of the review sites), and their review of the 4870 said it got "hugely hot" (right after describing the 4850 as "toasty," suggesting their 4870 actually got even hotter).

Yeah, well, I'd rather have a louder case than an overly hot one, and I tend to think most would agree. On the same hardware forum I mentioned, people were reporting load temps on their 4850/70's of 60 and lower by increasing the fan to just 65%. ATI would have been better off increasing fan speeds on both load and idle by just a little bit. Or at the very least, they should have had Rivatuner support from launch if they knew these cards had the potential to get pretty hot at default speeds. They should have thought less about "What kind of temps can our cards handle?" and more in terms of "What are acceptable temps to be circulating through a case all the time?"

Well, I stand by what I said. The cards should not have shipped with neither Rivatuner support nor properly working PowerPlay, if that is indeed the case. They're great cards, but a smudge like this on such a masterpiece of hardware is just dumb. It shouldn't happen, ever, plain and simple. And drivers, released well after the cards are launched, still not fixing the situation definitely shouldn't ever happen. It's very unprofessional, and I don't like it.
The fan fix works miracles(even though these cards are rated to run at the hot temps they do). I can drop my temp down 20C without even hearing it, though I turn it up some when I'm gaming.
Yea, the new drivers don't really bring anything new to the table, but at least when you search for driver on the AMD website THEY ACTUALLY HAVE SOME.
My 4870s in crossfire idle at 78c and load at 82c. With no fanfix. 9mmSpliff
About the same for me, although I would like it to idle and load at a cooler temp. I'll do the fanfix once I have my new build up. I dont mind my fan running louder so that it can run cooler. I probably wont even here it once it's in the case running with my speakers half way up when I'm gaming.
Fan speed 50% Idle=42 Load=56PC_X360
Nice temps, but they don't have to be that low. I run mine at about 32% and it stays at 49C idle. Pump it up to 45% while I play.
Ill probably set my fan to around 80, just because I hate heat...and I blast my music so I doubt the fan will annoy me.
Even if its loud, doubt its louder then my AC. lol
I'm about to get a couple of HD 4870's, I think load at 80°C is tolerable, that's comparable to my X1900XT which I don't have a problem with. If that's the temperature when it's idling then I definitely think there is room for improvement, power saving functions need to be enabled, or an official fan fix. If my HD 4870's get to 100°C, then I will definitely use the unofficial fan fix.

But just imagine your HD4870's in crossfire... how much heat that will generate.. two 80C cards next to each other... that's not good. You should use the fanfix right from the get go, imo. But do as you please. It SHOULD be okay.
Well the case I plan on getting will have 2 140mm fans blowing fresh air right in their area, so hopefully that will help alleviate the problem. If things get bad, I will use the fan fix for sure.Marfoo
Nice, yeah the two fans will cover it, lol. You're right.

If you're getting 100C with a HD4870 at full load, then you've got a case ventilation problem.
Even then, it's practically impossible to get 100C, as the card's fan kicks the fan speed to 80% (aka jet engine mode) once you go past 85C, IIRC.
I'd like to see what review sites says that the card gets that hot.

I understand that the HD4850 would increase case temps (as it's single slotted), but the HD4870 shouldn't have a profound effect on case temps as it's a dual slot solution. At least, I don't run into heat troubles with my HD4870 (even without the fanfix).
Also, do you know how loud the HD4870 fan is once you go above 40%? It moves a lot of air (even at more modest settings like 35%), but it's damn noisy once you go beyond 40%.
Also, 80C load temps for GPU's is nothing alarming. There have been much hotter cards like Nvidia's G80 line of cards and ATI's R600.
Also, I don't think it should be ATI's responsibility to make sure RV770 is supported by RivaTuner. Isn't that a community driven program?

Well, like I said, there isn't 100% confirmation if PowerPlay is at fault here.
But the temps are not causing card failures and the fan profiles have been certified for retail release. It runs hotter then most cards during idle, yes, but they're not showing any heat related errors or failures are they?
But it is a bit sloppy, IMO, if ATI/AMD knew that PowerPlay wasn't working in the driver set.
Sounds awesome. Everyone is getting great results with fanfix. I cant wait to try it out once I have my new build up since I didnt get the change to do it with my old HP computer. Parts are coming in today for the new build and this thing should run like a beast if I dont recieve any DOA parts. :( I'll most likely run mine at 50%. I hate high temps. 80C idle, what were you thinking ATi? :P I read earlier that it was defaulted for a "reason" but I prefer to have it louder and cooler, than quiet and HOT. I pulled out my HD4870 and that thing was pretty hot. I'm sure no one would like that.Elann2008
defaulted for a reason? maybe the reason is that the fan they installed on the 4870 won't last long on high speeds... or maybe they want to cook your GPU just in time for their new radeon. forced upgrade! hehehe.
