Hey guys I just got a new computer for christmas, but it won't run games at the quality it should. Starcraft 2 drops alot of FPS at ultra-graphics, and even on high. I cant even play Black Ops on my screens resolution (1920 x 1080) and I need low graphics otherwise the FPS drops too much, and then still the game will freeze sometimes. My specs are: OS Windows 7 64-bit Intel Core i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 ghz 6 Gb RAM NVidia Geforce GT 420 I'm really bad at all this but would be really glad if any of you could help, even thought you often hear stuff like this ;) thanks

That's not a very good GPU, and you're using high resolution, so the two won't work well together. Also, the i5 6xx's are dual cores, Black Ops likes the Quad core.

Errr... you should change "it won't run games at the quality it should" to "it won't run games at the quality I want". Not the same thing...

1080p, GT320 Black ops, 45-50fps outside, in buildings like 55-60FPS on Textures Extra, no AA, Texture filtering is automatic. Cpu is i7 860 though.

The card is perfectly capable.

I call shenanigans. Even though Black Ops is not that demanding of a game, this is an OEM card that's meant for Blu-Ray playback and simple/non-demanding 3D gaming. The card has trouble running Bad Company 2 at low and Modern Warfare 2 at medium.

Nope, I don't see it happening... Unless you're looking at the sky when recording your FPS. GT320 is like... Yeah..... Bad.

Decent cards range anywhere from 150 to 500 dollars, choose a pricepoint.

Well I'm 100% serious. If I look in the sky it jumps to 70-80 FPS. (:

EDIT:

I didn't know where to look exactly I just looked I guess. It's on combat training since I didn't feel like playing. Can get a screenie of my specs up if I must.

gt320 is faster than the gt420 according to passmark chart. Anyways, you have to check how big your PSU is If it's too small, you won't be able to upgrade even if you wanted to. That's the way prebuilt computers go. They put in the bare minimum to run the advertised specs.

Well I'd get a radeon 6850 or a geforce 460 depending on what your power supply is.

460W PSU. Not sure how much better you'd get with that power supply.

you need at least a 450w PSU and you have a PSU that is 460w

here is the link for you PC's info

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02613499&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=4352641&key=null&site=null#N1249

also a GTX 460 1GB is going for $179 right now with mail in rebates.

Probably a pretty mediocre PSU. A GTX 460 could max it out however an HD 6850 could work.

your computer doesn't suck balls..it just doesn't do what you want it to do. I bet it's real efficient and quiet. It's probably real sleek and compact but it just doesn't have the power you want from it i guess.

6850 would probably be doable with 460W, though personally, I wouldn't pair a 6850 with anything less than 500W, but I guess it depends on what else is in the PC.

If you do trade in that PC and get a new one, and tell us your budget we can guide you in the right direction :)
