Same here.I'm a SM player, but i like to dabble with the Eldar from time to time.
Ive always felt that Chaos are enjoyable a central part of any Warhammer game, but if its so we can have a fight against some 'nids then ill patiently wait for an expansion.
All in all, i think the game is looking and sounding promising, can't wait to play it.
I have been saying for quite a while now that I didn't think Chaos would be in DoW2, and Warhammer 40K nerds have ravenously attacked my opinion, but they always did so from the point of view of a Warhammer 40K fan.
From a gameplay perspective, Chaos is too similar to Space Marines. Now, sure, there are unique units enough to make them a unique faction, and their character is clearly unique enough, but iltimately it's just going to be big guys in big armour against big guys in big armour with horns.
From a gameplay perspective, Chaos is simply too similar to the Space Marines - and let's be honest, while Relic has (from what I can tell) stayed as true to WH40K's canon as they could, their audience is primarily gamers, not WH40K nerds, and a suspstantial percentage of those fans don't even know what WH40K is or that it's thirty years old. Hell, I've seen tons of forum threads indicating that Warhammer 40K is a ripoff of StarCraft.
And the needs of gamers have to come first. I'm not a 40K nerd, but I do love the universe, and while skipping Chaos (in the vanilla game - they will naturally feature in an expansion) may alienate some nerds, it won't alienate any gamers wanting a great game, but two armies who are functionally very similar is from a gameplay perspective simply not a good thing.
You also have to consider that the game is clearly being built for expansions - and having at least one army that a lot of people care about is enough to sell an expansion, which will probably in a majority of cases make the expansion-buyer get the original game, too (even though they will probably be standalone expansions). I think saving a big army for an expansion is a smart idea, and I think from a gameplay perspective it should be Chaos.
My ideal lineup would be the original four plus IG and Tyranids in the vanilla game, then Necrons and Tau in expansion one, but I'm expecting the original three plus Tyranids in the vanilla game, then Chaos and either IG or Necrons in expansion one, and either IG or Necrons and Tau in expansion two. Purely guesswork, but that's what I'd do.
Tyranids >>>>> Chaos
Chaos are too similiar to SM, in DOW 1, chaos units are some what the same as SM. Tyranids meanwhile, will be completly different to SM, Orkz and Eldar. :D
Great news.
However, I'm waiting on an IG confirmation. They're my favourite race in the game, and their sty1e of play is quite unique (the only faction with real basebuilding focuses) especially in Dawn of War II.
Tyranids >>>>> Chaos
gogators4life
to be honest, I don't really care who's in or who's out of the official campagin or the whole vanilla DoW2, I just want my warhammer fix!!! besides, my favorite SoB, with some luck, will only show up in expansions anyway^^"
But it's not the kind of situation where I won't buy the game if Chaos isn't there, it would just be nice if they were.
It would be nice if Relic does what aliblabla2007 once suggested, in which there are 3 races of "order" - Space Marines, Imp Guard and Eldar and 3 races of "disorder" - Chaos, Orks and Tyranids.
It would be a good combination of factions, and it would make just about everyone happy, from a universe and a gameplay point. ;)Doom_HellKnight
Doesn't leave much room for milking, though, and it means the game takes longer to make and is also harder to produce.
They can still release expansions, though - Dark Eldar, Tau, Sisters of Battle and Necrons.
5 races of order vs 5 races of disorder after expansions? Awesome.

Well, at least Relic's trying to ace up on that by conducting balance playtests on their games.
If they succeed in improving their ability to balance, then great.
If not..... at least they tried.
First step would be to make it easier for the Allies in CoH to quickly build up powerful AT defenses - the US's inability to counter the Wehrmacts's ability to quickly hit you with superior tanks and get everything over with is one thing that needs to be addressed.

Would it be 5 races of order and 5 of disorder though? SoB are clearly order, Tau are order, Necrons can't really be described as disordered and Dark Eldar, I'm not sure but they could probably fit under order as well.

Where does it say that if you have space marines you JUST HAVE to have Chaos.. There are plenty of chapters that don't fight Chaos day in and day out.. And Chaos Space Marines are a rarity in universe, the majority of chaos SM fight are IG type forces.

Same here.I second that. Anyway can't wait DAWN OF WAR IS AWESOME, AND DAWN OF WAR II WILL BLOW EVERY RTS TO COME OUT IN THE NEAR FUTURE OUT OF THE PARK!!!

Oh, and by "Chaos" I didn't mean Chaos Space Marines alone. I meant the overall forces of Chaos, be it Daemons, Space Marines, The Lost and the Damned or whatever.
Sorry to turn another one of your threads into a Chaos debate, gogators4life. Thanks very much for the info. ;)
i didnt like the original Dawn of War 40k, so i though relic was overated until i bought Company of heroes a week ago. i love that game and now im interested in DoW2 cause it has the cover system.
Say, is it possible to still go infantry in Dawn of War 2? i didnt play too much of Dawn of War 40k cause i didnt like it that much, but i do remember one or two dreadnoughts completely tearing squads to shreds.
BTW, the reasoning im asking is cause im an infantry player. i just like using mass amounts of small guys :D
Infantry will play a huge roll in DOW 2. Almost every DOW 2 infantry unit is customizable. :)gogators4life

but in an earlier preview, Relic has stated that only force commanders are customizable ( which is downright laughable limitation to a rts of rather small scale ) .....is this an official update, or just you saying it?

What earlier preview???
How could FC the only one be customizable? That's stupid and never happened.
Almost all inf units will be customizable, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more customizable than DOW 1 inf(thanks to wargear).
Also, there will be over 100 wargears for each faction.
this preview , 2nd question.
i'm not saying you're making things up, becoz it might have been updated and since i have stopped paying attention long ago i wouldn't know. if that's the case i stand corrected.
if not....surprise. the biggest DoW fan on gs actually didn't pay attention.
You don't need wargears to customize your units, wargear is neat addtion though, there are wargear for vechiles too. Units like assualt sm squad can be customized to use hammer, etc. Hold on let me post some pics....
i see what you mean. but that doesn't change things much does it? the only meaningful way to incorporate wargear customization ( instead of limited loadout customization ) , especially in a game that doesn't have very large scale to begin with, is to include every unit. right now, we are looking at a game which only allows us to equip looted/earned wargears on less than a handful of units...this doesn't really sound very hip to me. and of coz, no Chaos. that's a big fat LOL allrite....Jinroh_basic
So your saying this game is lame, just because there is no chaos?:|

even the half hearted Warhammer fans know how DE FACTO the Chaos ( not just the Chaos SM, but the entire Chaos forces ) actually is to the entire universe. so there's really no argument needed here.
but it's not like an Imperial scum would understand anyway. ;) ( in case you take it personally, this last bit is only j/k )
