My current system is ok for playing most older games such as Halo 2, Halo, C&C and stuff but if I plan to play some much newer games (which I do) I definately need a new video card. Also I may be getting another 1GB of RAM from a friends PC soon. Here are my current specs:

OS Name Microsoft® Windows VistaTM Home Premium
OS Version 6.0.6000
CPU Name Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13GHz
Video Adapter
Name NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
Video Processor GeForce 7300 GT
Manufactory NVIDIA
DAC Type Integrated RAMDAC
Memory Size 256MB
Video Mode 1440 x 900 x 4294967296 colors
Current Refresh Rate 74Hz
Driver Version 7.15.11.6222
Total RAMMemory 2046MB
160GB HDD 7800RPM
No Sound Card
20" Acer Widescreen

So I'm looking at a new video card for games like Bioshock and Oblivion. Also do I need a sound card for a 2 speaker setup? I really don't want to pay more than $250 but $300 max. Thanks

Go for an X1950PRO and a gig of Corsair RAM. You don't need a sound card for any speaker setup.

EDIT: Oh, you're getting the RAM from a friend. In that case, a GTS 320MB should be just within your budget.

You definitely need a new video card, as you said.

Since you're on a budget of only ~$250, I'd recommend spending all of that on a new graphics card if you want BioShock and Oblivion. I think you can get an 8800GTS for around that.

If you're a US resident, newegg would be the best site to purchase from.

Unfortunately I live in Canada so that rules out newegg.

Not bad, should get you high settings in the games you listed. Hopefully someone who owns an 8600 will give you their opinion. Although, for the money, I would go with an X1950PRO.

Well, what's your motherboard? As long as it supports PCI Express x16, you should be fine, assuming your PSU is up to snuff.

Its an ASUS Motherboard with a 16x PCI-E slot that my current card is in. And that other card you suggested looks nice. I might get it instead.

You'll need a 8xxx from nVidia, or a 2xxx from ATi if you want DX10.

7900gs or 7950gt are both great
