I'm still trying to stay optimistic, but these early trailers and previews aren't sounding good. It seems they're turning the series into Splinter Cell: Conviction instead of the great open assassination puzzels that made Blood Money one of my favorite games of all time. But we still know very little about the game and it's too early to judge the whole thing.

Does this trailer make yall excited for the new Hitman?

Thanks for posting that, but it just helps confirm my suspicions. -extremely linear and scripted -3rd person cover mechanics for stealth -weird super sense abilities -dumb platforming and pulling people off ledges -lots of killing innocent people -gun fights -chopper chases and slow motion jumping sequences That sounds NOTHING like a Hitman game. Now as I've said I'm not writing this game off. I'm hoping this is just some tutorial level that's meant to be linear and teach the game mechanics (like in Blood Money), but man, this isn't looking good.

My impressions from this gameplay video:

Good:

  • Graphics
  • Animations
  • Voice-acting
  • Light and dark stealth mechanics besides the usual field of view

Bad:

  • Super-powers
  • One button takedowns triggered too far from the enemies
  • Point A to B level design
  • Lots of scripted events and few actual gameplay possibilities
  • The helicopter sequence

I feel the same way, but the exact opposite :P

EDIT: I Agree with you on the "super sense ability". Maybe put in there to help new comers to the series, and maybe you can turn it off?

It depends on the context. If this is like a one off mission or a tutorial its pretty slick and awesome. Hitman has always lacked that polish to make it playable and accessible as an action game. This seems to be filling that void and removing a lot of the clunkiness. But if the game continues at this rate it will lose the essence of the series. The only thing I thought was odd was that he couldn't take the uniform of the first guard he killed. Just on the 'superpowers', as people are calling it, isn't it a memory device? Like he's already seen those guards or something and can remember their paths?

Gotta agree about it looking like Splinter Cell: Conviction. Kind of disappointing to me. I liked all the different ways I could finish the Hitman games ...

Most people don't seem to know this, but all the Hitman games I've played you could play stealth or action.... don't think this will be any different, they just have upgraded the action parts it seems...

Pretty much. The jump from Blood Money to Absolution is pretty huge. Blood Money was a 2006 game. That's basically 6 years since the last Hitman game so you would expect some big changes especially in terms of action parts. I happen to like it. It makes your character feel like a major badass and the soundtrack is pretty damn sick.

I use to call Hitman Absolution, Hitman Conviction as well, but after watching the latest gameplay videos, my mind has changed completely. I like what I've seen so far.

I ain't gonna judge it by just one mission, that said I think it looks good. The Instincts thing is kinda wobbly as far as I'm concerned but it's not worse then me just not using it. That said it does seem like Hitman game if not one that seems to have more flow then the previous ones that consisted of simply missions upon missions. Wether it'll be good or not Is unsure, I'd have to try it to give my own verdict on the game.

True, but how would you play stealthy in this level? It forces you into action bits and the "stealth" is way different than other Hitman games. In the past Hitman games Agent 47 wasn't a super athletic Sam Fisher monkey, stealth was all about figuring out the map and solving the "puzzle", not hiding behind desks in the dark.

However I suppose it would be stupid to be against the new game mechanics if they just offer players more options, but I'm just hope they don't stray to far from what made Blood Money awesome.

I just can't help the feeling that this game will end up like SC:C, a very solid game in it's own right, but somewhat of a betrayal of the series.

From that video, we can tell it's definitely upgraded and incorporated more action into Hitman. Saying that, not all stealth levels were about figuring out a map or solving a puzzle....sooner or later you are going to have to hide behind a desk or around a wall. I'm sure it will have both stealth and action, maybe not as much stealth as let's say, Hitman 1, but still there. PS: conviction also had stealth as well. I don't mind giving the player options.

Looks good. Seems like the one shown will be a one off one since you dont really assassinate anyone, just try and escape. Im sure that there will be a difficulty setting without the super powers, not that they really helped at all.

I agree. When they showed off the very first trailer, people were complaining about the cover system. I know that the previous Hitman games didn't have a cover system but I think now that it should. I mean.. not having the option to take cover while in stealth is weird. When you sneak around, do you not take cover behind objects or have your back against the wall? Even Deus Ex HR uses a cover system.

I don't get the comparison with Conviction besides the action parts.. If anything, this gameplay vid looks 20 times better than SP Conviction, alone. Can you pick up a sculpture and bash an enemy in the head? Or pick up a weapon like the baton? It's all about giving the player options here. Splinter Cell Conviction was a stop and pop action/stealth game and there lies the problem. Hitman looks more dynamic.

My only disappointment is that David Bateson nor Jesper Kyd will be playing the roles they had in the previous Hitman games. Bateson's deep voice, Kyd's dark ambience... all gone now...

By bringing up SC:C I was comparing it's departure from the traditional SC games to how I think Absolution could depart from the traditional Hitman games, I didn't mean it as a direct game to game comparison (although from what I've seen the games are very comparable...and in Conviction you could take enemies hostage). As for the cover system I'm not against it, I just hope it's not needed.

I don't think the game will force you to take cover, but in real life - people do take cover. Just not as rigidly.

I like the cover mechanic - however, my greatest fear is that they are forgoing the non-linear levels found in the previous game in favor of more linear levels in order to achieve that "cinematic experience".

Iif you really think about it, the previous Hitman games had linear levels too.... they just could be approached in different ways, but I TOTALLY understand your point and how they want the cinematic feel.

As for cover system, it's definitely needed since I remember in prior games I sometimes couldn't take cover properly and got caught just because of technical controls...

The previous games were linear in that the target assigned to you is dead regardless of how you do it.

But the key is "how you do it".

I wouldn't mind these stealth levels so much if there were many ways to traverse through the level. I mean, it's a big city. Surely 47 can take route A through the apartment buildings or route B through the underground?
