New Nvidia Volta, Successor to Maxwell, GPUs planned for 2016.

NVIDIA today at the GTC 2013 conference released a new GPU Roadmap which has unveiled their Next-Generation Maxwell and Volta GPUs planned for 2014 and 2016 respectively.

NVIDIA Volta GPU would be the successor the Maxwell which arrives in 2014. The NVIDIA Volta GPU would feature stacked DRAM package on the GPU die along with an impressive 1 TB/s memory bandwidth which is beyond anything which current generation GPUs or even the 288 GB/s Titan has to offer!

Current GPUs have been limited by memory bandwidth which affects their overall performance. Stacked DRAM on NVIDIA Volta GPUs would eliminate this flaw by stacking packages of DRAM on top of each other on the GPU die so that the GPU can directly communicate with them and this would lead to an 1 TB/s memory bandwidth on NVIDIAs next generation GPUs.

As far as Maxwell is concerned  the GPU was announced back in 2011 and is sheduled for launch in 2014. The Maxwell GPU would be built on the TSMC 20nm fabrication process however it is not known what manufacturing process would the NVIDIA Volta GPU use. NVIDIA Maxwell would feature Unified Virtual memory which possibly means that the system memory could be shared across the GPU memory.

In 2008, we introduced Tesla, our first GPU that incorporated CUDA. Two years later, we introduced Fermi. In 2012 we introduced Kepler.

Next two GPUs from us: Maxwell is coming with unified virtual memory, which makes it possible for GPU operations to see the CPU memory and vice versa, so program-ability is easier. After that is Volta, which is even more energy efficient, which has a new technology called stacked DRAM.

Volta is going to solve one of the biggest challenges facing GPUs today, which is access to memory bandwidth. With Volta, well prevent from getting off our chip onto a PC board it will have DRAM on same silica sub-strate, which will carry a whole bunch of DRAMs stacked atop each other. Well cut a hole through the silicon and connect each layer. Were going to achieve one terabyte per second of bandwidth. NVIDIA

Wow, that sounds so good, especially the 1TB/s memory bandwidth. My GTX 670 has 192GB/s.

Assuming they implement HSA as AMD is likely to do with their next GPU's (and they better!) wouldn't virtual memory essentially eliminate the "copy" issue with GPGPU computing? With HSa eliminating the latency issue in the DX11 stack, that would mean low latency physics that actually affect gameplay, as well as AI/pathfinding and culling options running on the GPU instead of the CPU. That would be a HUGE, massive improvement to performance both purely in the grpahics department, but in temr so fphsyics and AI - this could truly be what makes next generation games feel "next generation".

the 7970 has 264gb/s mem bandwidth already and it was released back in december 2011 which means the card was probably finished early 2011, and the design of it maybe even 2010.  So yeah, its not too hard to imagine 1tb/s mem bandwidth 5 years from the design of the 7970.

Will maxwell be a noticeable improvement over the 600 series?

the 7970 has 264gb/s mem bandwidth already and it was released back in december 2011 which means the card was probably finished early 2011, and the design of it maybe even 2010.  So yeah, its not too hard to imagine 1tb/s mem bandwidth 5 years from the design of the 7970.
