Let me introduce the new Series 7 of the Monitor lineup:

Paradigm Monitor Series 7 Loudspeakers

Paradigm is a well known Canadian speaker manufacturer who not only designs speakers in Canada, but constructs them in house. While their Paradigm Reference lineup will remain to be made in Canada, the new series of Monitor speakers will not. The Monitor Series 7 will instead be made in China, Paradigm had this to say on the matter,"in order to stay ahead of Monitor series competitors we made the production move."

The Monitor Series 7 will also be getting a decent price cut, as the new Monitor 11 flagship will retail for $799 USD, instead of $1299 for the Canadian made Series 6. While Paradigm promises quality, we'll have to wait for some reviews and hope that this doesn't become another situation like PSB.

As follows are the full prices for the new lineup:

  • Atom Monitor: $199
  • Mini Monitor: $279
  • Monitor 7: $449
  • Monitor 9: $599
  • Monitor 11: $799
  • Center 1: $379
  • Center 3: $599
  • Surround 1: $279
  • Surround 3 $399

I've always felt that when one is ready to spend X amount of money on sound quality, self made is the way to go. It is the same deal as buying a gaming pc vs. building one. You get so much more bang for your buck it is ridiculous.

Yeah, though there are some rare opportunities that pop up every once and a while. On Canuck Audio Mart I saw a Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Signature System going for $2000, the drivers alone are worth much more than that. Sadly I was too late on the sale, and yes I agree, DIY has great value.

I used to feel the same way, but premade speakers offer some scale benefits. It's not quite the same as car audio or computers where you can build something better with quality components. Speaker designers have specced the cabinet out for the driver and all of the cabinets are precision-cut. There is more opportunity for user-error building speaker boxes and designing crossovers than there is in other hobbies, in my experience. That said, I am happy to have built my own subwoofer, so I may delve into making another pair of towers down the road, some day. Regarding Paradigm, it makes sense for them. If they have to make the move to remain competitive, it's better than going out of business, right? The bigger question is whether they are using the same drivers, crossover components, and cabinet designs? Boz

Here is the v6 Canadian made Monitor 7 (MSRP: $759/pair)

And here is the new v7 (or Series 7 as its now called) Monitor 7 (MSRP: $449/pair)

You can get kits which get you pre-cut MDF cabinets and pre-made crossovers. I'm sure their are places which will make a crossover for you too if you provide them with the crossover frequencies.

Of course, even some companies such as Solen will give you complementary crossover design (assuming you purchase parts form them), and if you pay a little extra they'll even assemble it.

I know im late with this but incase anyone is finding this post now and doesn't already know. The list prices for the s.7 Monitors are now per speaker, not per pair. making the s.7's significantly more expensive than the v6s despite being made in china.
