I am getting a new gaming PC next week. I always build my PC part by part. Max budget 1200$ (probably)

In case of AMD :

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-79OFXTA-UD5

Ram: Kingston KVR1333 (2x2) * 2

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 3.4 Ghz

ALL Together 1000$ (Without graphics card)

In case of Intel :

Mobo: Asus P6T SE

Ram : OCZ RPR 1866 (3x2)

CPU: Intel Core i-7 930 2.8 Ghz

ALL Together 1140$ (Without graphics card)

The question is simple AMD or INTEL ?

Haven't still decided about GRAPHICS CARD

Intel as they are the way to go right now. I would say get the i7 920 save some cash and use that for the Graphics card.

What is it for? if its mainly for gaming and everyday use, save yourself the extra money (you won't notice much difference in gaming) Go AMD.

and put more towards mouse/keyboard/monitor, or your GPU.

The intel chip is fast but also costs $100 more. I have always bought AMD, even through these last few years when Intel has been smoking em. Why? Because games are what I use my computer for and when it comes to games the difference between a top end AMD and a top end Intel can't be noticed while playing. Sure I could run a benchmark and go crying about how my chip gets a lower score but in the real world, who cares? My recommendation is to get the less expensive AMD cpu and put the extra hundred bucks into a beefier graphics card.

The video card is usually the most important concideration. If saving $100 on a cpu means you get a much better video card, then that's what you should do. With your budget, the graphics card you can get with the Intel setup will leave you extremely dissapointed. Where are you shopping?

It depends on what you want. AMD is cheaper but intel has been on top in performance. I remember back when All I used were AMD but now I switched to intel. On whatever cpu you decide get an aftermarket cooler for it because the sotck fans suck. For graphics same thing. Nvidia performs better but ATI is cheaper.

Intel is the better choice it costs more becasue it performs better if you want an I7 get the 920 that will ave you some cashola for the GPU Unless you know how to overlock or want to overclock and are planning on spending more on liquid cooling and what not then get an AMD or you could just get an intel and not have to overclock it.

i would go with that amd rig if i were you. because if you are gaming, you will need a really nice graphics card to use that intel chip to its fullest. and you only have like another 60 bucks to spend on graphics card. go with the amd rig and get a 5850. If its not for gaming then go with that intel rig. its almost twice as fast as the amd acording to vantage.

If it's mostly for gaming, go the cheaper route which is AMD.

With a $1200 pc the graphics card should be worth a lot more than $200 or less. You'd want something like a radeon 5870 in that.

You are spending too much on the AMD motherboard, and you should buy a 955 instead of a 965. Go with AMD if it means you can afford a better graphics card with that additional 200-300 dollars. An AMD build with 5870 absolutely smashes an Intel build with 5850 in gaming.

Thaks for all your recommendations! The PC will be for gaming.

No overclocking, no need for mouse, keyboard, monitor

The budget can go a bit further.

Haven't still decided, but leaning towards AMD with 5770.

Core 2 Duo with 5850 beats I7 980 Extreme with 5770 in gaming, except ones which actually use quad-cores such as GTA IV. The importance of GPU is MASSIVE in comparison to any other component. As for the AMD CPU, a 965 is basically a slightly overclocked 955. Simply buy a 955, go into BIOS and increase the multiplier by one, and you may start calling it 965.

I'd go with two 5770s in xfire or a single 5850. With the money you save on the AMD system, you should have more money available for the graphics card/s which will make the most difference here. Also, try to get ram with the lowest cas latency possible.

good advise. i hate it when firms bring out 3.2 3.4 and 3.6 version and then hack up the price by about 30 pound when all they done is oc it alittle

I didn't know that at all! So I guess it has to be amd, all the way.
