Got a new PC, and i love it : 8800GT, Q6600, 2g ram @800Mhz, P5K-E, and i kept my ''old'' ViewSonic 17'' LCD.

Now when i play games (Crysis, Cod4), the only resolution i can use are : 800/600,1024/768, 1152/864, 1280/1024,

Is it possible to set my resolution to 1280/960, which is a 1.33 ratio andlooks better IMO than 1280/1024 (1.25 ratio)

thx.

Exactly what model ViewSonic do you have? If it's more than two years old and 17" I would err on the 1280 x 1024 side as it's native rez. In fact, if you are going to use LCD for your system then you always want to use it's native rez as anything else will make it look pretty nasty. If you're running a 8800GT on a 17" display then odds are you will have more than enough HP under the hood to run at the screens native rez.

If you're in XP (or lower) then just right click your desktop and left click the "properties" line on the pop up context menu. From there you will see a "Display Properties" tab. At the top of it click the "settings" tab. There you will find a simple slider bar that lets you change your display rez. You may find you have to reset the system after doing this. Thats pretty much it.

If you're running Vista (any viersion excluding the new server), then right click the desktop and left click the option for Nvidia (as you're running a 8800GT) and it will launch the Nvidia Control Panel. There will be a slider option in the screen settings tab for changing the rez.

With an NVIDIA card, it's not necessary to use a 3rd party tool like RivaTuner to get your custom resolutions. In the regular Windows options for monitor properties, just uncheck "Hide modes this monitor cannot display". Then back in the NVIDIA control panel, turn off monitor (flat panel) scaling. You can choose any standard resolution you like and it will simply be centered on the screen. If you prefer to use a 4:3 ratio like 1280x960 instead of a 5:4 like 1280x1024, you'll just have some black bars on the top and bottom of the screen when running the game. I've actually been doing this recently while playing Age of Empires II, since it doesn't have a widescreen resolution. And before the thread gets hijacked with comments about playing old games, I'll just say I'm not allowed to buy any new games before Christmas; friends and family actually got together and made this demand.
