He said it was a 939. Just go to newegg and then go to AMD processors...and pick one out.

939 CPUs are in short supply. I think just about the only ones you can get that aren't Socket AM2 is the 4200 x2 which is the 3200 dual core equivilent. If you can find a 4400 x2 though that will last you better as there is 1mb cache per core as opposed to the 4200 which only has 1mb shared.

Edit: Also have a look on Ebay, you can get some good 939 deals on there. If you can get a 4800 X2 at a decent price you'll be laughing.

Googling for it, it sounds like your motherboard has been used in a dual-core setup: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?x=5&dlc=en&lc=en&product=1817035&lang=en&cc=us&y=5&docname=c00496280 No idea if you need a BIOS update for it, though. I don't know there... you'd probably have to do even more searching, or just bite the bullet and try a dual-core. I doubt it supports overclocking, though... which makes investing extra $ into a higher-end 939 processor feel somewhat sillier.

4200x2 = dual core 3500+ he would be better off buying a whole new system, 939 cpus are over priced if you can even fined them

Blimey! They say thouble bears 3 children, the first two have shown themselves; divorce and theft, when are you going to meet the third problem child. If I were you I would avoid any black cats crossing your path.

Seriously though, if you want a Dual core, just get a 4200.

Yep, probably not worth upgrading to a faster processor if u have a socket 939 CPU. Sure, you could get a dual-core, but I doubt it would be that much faster. From memory I think there is a X2 4600+and even a X2 4800+ for socket 939. But they are expensive and hard to find. If I remember right, there was also a dual-core FX-60 for socket 939 at one stage. I am in the same situation as you, with a socket 939 3000+ CPU. If I do upgrade, it is probably more worth my while to get a cheap Core 2 Duo motherboard and processor.
