AMD X2 4000+
MSI K9A2 CF-F 790X AM2+
2gb DDR2-800
250gb Sata HDD
(1) DVD Dive
Antec Earthwatts 430W
Diamond HD3850 256mb

Problem is nothing happens while the HD3850 is installed in the computer. I know the problem is between the power supply and the HD3850 because we put in the 6600 GT, which I am no longer using, and it worked perfectly. I was confident myself that 430W was enough for the HD3850 and was even told so by other reliable members. To their credit, it is possible that we just got a bad PSU, but that doesnt explain why the computer works with the 6600 GT. Unless its possible that the PSU isnt supplying the advertised wattage. That even possible to supply some rather than all of the power?

I'm almost sure that I'm missing something here, but what can it be? All else fails, I'm going to return the PSU for a recplacement and if that doesnt work, I'm giong to order a 500W PSU for the comp.

Yes, a 430W no-name PSU should be more than enough my 430W handlea Intel E4500 OC from stock 2.2 to 3.4ghz and OC RAM and OC NBchipset and has 2 Sata HDD and 2CD/DVD AND a OCéd HD3850 and 2chassie 92mm fans perfectly.,

Your PSU is most certainly broke or you forgot to put in the extra 6pin power connector at the back on the HD3850.?

No, I made sure that the 6-pin PCI power connector was in and secure. I'm giong to call both Antec and Diamond tomorrow and hopefully figure something out.

First thing I'd assume is that the card wasn't slotted or the power connector wasn't installed properly. Second thing I'd check is that the graphics card power connector doesn't have any physical damage or obvious blockage inside the pins. Then I'd check to make sure the PCI-e connector on the power supply isn't physically damaged and that the wires leading to it aren't damaged.

After that, you could consider giving the power supply an RMA, but I'm not entirely convinced that's the problem. It sounds more like the graphics card to me. Your power supply runs a computer with a graphics card. Your HD3850 does not drive a monitor. Odds are against the power supply being bad, and more towards the graphics card itself.

Heh. Stupid me forgot to mention one critical detail: I tested the HD3850 in my computer and it booted to the desktop with no problem. I tend to not think things entirely through. Gah, I guess you could call it a flaw of mine.

Also, there is no visible damage nor obvious blockage to anything. Maybe the PSU is just defective.

Ah, now that does sound like a problem with the power supply then. It's most likely defective in that case, RMA the bugger.
