Hey, Im into RTSs but it seems like its not as big as it use to be. Theres starcraft 2, that relatively new, but not too much. And Im really not into the total war series.

age of empires
rise of nations (one of my favs)
starcfrat/warcraft
Company of Heroes/ Dawn of wars
Sup Commander / C&Cs

Is Rts fading away with console multiplats plagueing PCs? Am i just missing any RTSs ? I have no idea

Ive tried warhammer 40: dawn of war, it just seems like ive exhausted my RTS possibilities, and the only thing people talk about is starcraft 2, which is a great game, but yeah seems hard to find just a new rts thats not starcraft or total war

Sins of a Solar Empire is fantastic. I would wait until they release Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion though. It's coming out soon (June I think) and it has all the content from the first game and its expansions.

Those are some of my favorite RTS games, they're pretty fun...

Well, total war is a hybrid of both rts and tbs. The tbs section is managing your cities/provinces, conduction diplomacy, making armies, constructing buildings, etc. The RTS part is when you go into a battle with someone else. It can be either land, sea (newer games), siege (ex. against a castle) and in the new Shogun 2 expansion, Fall of the Samurai, port sieges.

Sins of a solar empire is absolutely fantastic, i just cant play i anymore because games take days to complete. That doesnt go well when you are a daddy! If you want to broaden horizons to more strategy type games the Anno games(dawn of discovery) and anno 2070 or whatever it is called are great and have rpg elements. Theres always civ 5 which is great as well.

I miss the mid to late 90's for the RTS genre. Those were the days. There were your blockbusters like Total Annihilation, Warcraft 1-2, Age of Empires 1-2, the Command and Conquer games, and there were your lesser known but good games like Act of War, Sacrifice, Earth 2150, and Ground Control. The list goes on and on. The RTS genre today is nothing like those days. I feel so old.

Are any RTS games on Kickstarter? I might donate some money to a good one.

This year is a bit slow for strategy games, the Shogun 2 expansion Fall of the Samurai is great though.

Next year we get Company of Heroes 2 and C&C generals 2 so that should make up for it.

Act of War was so awesome, although a bit unbalanced. I'd love to see another Act of War game made.

I suppose if you really liked Company Heroes I would recommend Men of War: Assault Squad. It's realistic like CoH but it takes the realism and micromanagement to another level. For example: all units have an inventory with weapons, ammo, equipment. Units have a limited amount of ammo, vehicles need fuel, etc. It's a fun but challenging game.

This, oh boy this. Along with the SCII additions.

Generals 2 at the top of that list for me, then SCII (yet to play it) and COH 2. All sequels to fantastic games.

They make everyone look bad with the quality of their games, nobody else is able to come even close, it makes the entire RTS genre seem in ruins.

That's just as absurd as the other guy's statement. If anything, I think Blizzard has perfected the small scale old-school RTS format, and has thus actually helped the genre by stemming the need for more of those kind of strategy games.

Yep, that's what people want and they provide it, that + the complete balance needed for competitive play, nobody else is and will ever be capable of that unless they take their time making the games and investing a lot into prolonging the development. Sure, there are other fun RTSs, a lot of them are fun, but they're not "great" games overall, there're a lot of fun games in any genre, but a good number of them range from terrible to half decent.

I definitely disagree with that. I love RTS games, but I don't really like StarCraft at all. I'll take Command & Conquer over StarCraft any day. As a matter of fact most of the RTS games I own I would place above StarCraft 2. I don't see what is so special about it.

There isn't one except Starcraft AND Warcraft and I'm not the one saying it, it's the entire world, why exactly can't any other company make a game that gathers a decently sized community, great multiplayer and focus on extreme performance (which an RTS is all about, strategy, it's the third word that makes the name of the genre)?

Fun =/= great

The only fun game that ever had a chance was CoH that had the most active community in any RTS except Blizz's (at least 20 times smaller than any Blizzard game made, but far more popular than anything ever created), even like that, it's wasn't a game made for great multiplayer and it sold poorly.

It's called reality, not ignorance, when people want something you give it to them, gimmicks (this so called fun in RTS) won't keep anyone (by anyone I mean the majority) interested for more than several hours.

There have been many great, fun RTS, that were great games besides Starcraft:roll: (though I will say for online, it was the most competitive and longest lasting community for an RTS, that I know of)

Total Annhilation

Most of the C&C games

WIC

COH

Supreme Commander.

You don't have to like them, or think that they are great games, but many people do, and thats the point.

TA is a niche game liked for the only reason the as extremely niche title Supreme Commander was liked, they were both mediocre at best as games and WiC is an RTT as for the C&C series they all blow hard, except the RA series, but they still aren't a complete package and are overall just "decent".

I like them all, but I don't bow down to them, because they all lack a lot or quite a few things, "few" people love them (a few more love EA RTSs), but that's besides the point, the only point that's relevant is that almost all people want games like Starcraft and Warcraft and that's why they sell and have extremely active communities, they're all around superb products, a feature won't sell a game and it won't make its flaws less relevant (TA and SupCom) and similar games that lack multiplayer quality (any RTS besides Blizz's, no matter how you don't like it, it's a fact) and adding "chance" into an RTS will never make it popular in both sales and community (any Relic game, CoH was a one time only).

There are only three companies that make great RTSs and (3 because you added...) RTTs.

Blizzard makes the best and only relevant (quality wise) RTSs (call it ignorance or what you want, they're not the only RTSs I play, but that much is a fact).

Massive Entertainment made the best RTT series and to a small degree Relic with their DoW 2 game (not series).

Just gonna have to disagree with ^^. The games I listed were great games, I think so, others do to.

You don't think so, there will be others to think like you on it.

Bottom line is that there are plenty of people who thought they were great games. Which actually doesn't really need your validation.

So at this point, I disagree, and will have fun playing all sorts of great RTS games, and wait for some to come.

So greatness is all about sales numbers and the competitive scene for the game. I define greatness in gaming very differently, but to each their own I guess. I found that many great games in many genres had poor sales. They became cult classics years later.

I can no longer take you seriously. Either you're a huge troll or you're just that big of a Blizzard fanboy. C&C is the father of RTS. That's where it started. I can't place any game over the Westwood C&C games, let alone another RTS. StarCraft is an average RTS that people praise because it's from Blizzarrd and they played StarCraft a lot. It hardly does anything innovative or different. As a matter of fact, most C&C games have more depth than StarCraft ever will.

C&C

Sins of a Solar Empire

Company of Heroes

Supreme Commander

All better than StarCraft 2, and I own StarCraft 2 so I'm not bashing a game I don't own. If anything, StarCraft just took the C&C formula and dumbed down the resource gathering. Yeah, what game is better is subjective, but you're acting like everyone thinks the way you do, and that's simply not true at all.

lol? Have you played any of the C&C games. The original Command and Conquer laid the work for all the other RTS games. C&C - perfection. + Covert Ops. Red Alert - My favorite of the series. Aftermath was the best. Counter-Strike was good too. Tib Sun + Firestorm - one of my all time favorite games for LAN. Plus some of the mods were amazing. RA2 - great multiplayer. Renegade - pretty unpolished game overall, but I still had fun playing it LAN. Generals - the last good C&C game before EA destroyed the franchise.

I actually legitimately don't get why SC2 is so popular. What does it do to innovate? What does it do that makes it funner than any other RTS? Is it really only popular to be popular? Like did tons of people buy it because they are Blizzvision fanboys, and then tons more people buy it because tons of people bought it? Or do people actually enjoy it?

I agree with you here. The video games industry is weird that way. It seems like when a company or game franchise is on top, the second place is way far down the totem pole. You see that with any game released by Blizzard, and you see it with Call of Duty. Then there are plenty of other games that are better than half as good, but don't sell even half the amount.

Niche? I'd hope you'd realise had any of those other RTSs from the mid to late 90s had a service like battlenet that your precious starcraft wouldn't be near what it is today.

When released way back StarCraft had an online system like no other RTS. StarCraft 2 is only successful because of the online system StarCraft 1 had. People bought it just because they played StarCraft a lot. The games have nothing innovative in them. They just copied the Command & Conquer formula and dumbed down the resource gathering.

The best C&C games weren't made by EA. Thanks for posting something irrelevant.

But they didn't last as long due to EA's pressure.
