First of all, I didn´t really know where to post this, so here it goes..

I recently bought a MacBook, so my question is: Do I really need to download an anti-virus software? I´ve heard rumors that you don´t need an anti-virus software for Mac.

Thanks in advance.

Nobody NEEDS anti-virus, I don't have it and still don't have any viruses.

But why would you get a mac?

Thanks for the replies.

I got the Mac for school related reasons, and because it had a special school offer. So i got it pretty cheap.

Oh don't worry. As more and more people buy Macs, more and more programmers will see that making malware for the OS X would be just as "useful" as programming them for Windows. All that BS on how Apple sells their computers as "untouchable" from viruses is slowly being taken away the more people buy Macs to replace a Windows machine. Ever so slowly, Apple digs its own grave ;) To answer your question TC you don't really need an AV at the moment, maybe in the near future, but if you plan on downloading files and transferring them to your buddies or yourself on a Windows machine, you best well use an AV to scan them before they get pissed at you :P

I dont have one, but if you run bootcamp then you will need one for that version of windows. Its not that you cant get a virus, but your chances of getting one are very slim.

Wow, attitude problem much? Anyway although Apple do for the record say they recommend using an AV program in reality its VERY rare for malware to affect OSX. If I had a Mac I would not download/install any anti-virus.

Having a mac pretty much nullifies most of the common viruses most pc users get. The only way your going to get a virus on your mac is if you go looking for one and clicking on any and every seedy link and going to various websites. I say your fine without it so long as you stick to your traditional websites and aren't dowloading pirated software. Otherwise firfox/gmail does a fairly good job of keeping viruses out even more so with mac. However if you really want to be careful i guess go with what other people reccomend.

Yeah this.... Viruses on Mac now are more common not only cause of the growing popularity of Apple, but also because lots of people also put Windows on MAC as a virtual machine. You should be fine without an antivirus, but something free like Avast wouldn't hurt....
