http://www.freemmo.com/

This site has a good list of free to play mmo games that have no fees etc.

WoW has a subscription fee but there are plenty of free clones of it out there.

Hope that helps somewhat. :)

WoW, Aion, Warhammer...etc the more popular MMO's have a subscription fee of $15 a month. There are some out there that are free to play and there are others that include some microtransaction, you can play the game but if you want some sword or armor or a mount you'll have to pay for it. I only have played wow, so if you don't play nothing happens really. You do gain some rested xp but aside from that nothing happens to your character.

Honestly, the free to play ones are typically junk compared to the subscription fee ones. There is a reason why they charge you a fee.

Yes, as others have said, most of the MMO's worth playing have a subscription fee. I think Lord of the Rings Online has the lowest at $10 or something. There are very few free mmo's worth playing, but I know Dungeons and Dragons Online will let you play for free up until level 10. "Runes of Magic" is a pretty close copy of WoW I think, although I don't enjoy it as much. Perfect World is another free-to-play grinder MMO. I've never heard of an MMO that takes away experience, skills, etc. if you don't log in for a few days - you're character just doesn't gain anything.

As the posters above stated, there are very few free MMO:s that are worth playing. If you are looking for a game that is easy to get into and does everything very well, then World of Warcraft is a pretty safe bet.
