Hey guys

Im pretty new to PC gaming and having been a console gamer all my life (until now the most advanced thing ive played on PC is minecraft) im finding it very hard to adjust to a mouse and keyboard, if anyone has any tips on how to combat this it would be appreciated?

The one question failing this is, can you get controllers for your Pc like xbox controllers?

you can actually buy wireless adapters for the xbox360 controller wireless ver. to work on pc, and they sell pc xbox 360 controller variants of all the other xbox ones. there are unofficial platstyation variants as well. however i would use mouse & keybaord over a controller for fps's. the accuracy that a keyboard & mouse can achieve with enough practice is kind of ridiculous. in a head2head comparison some of the best controller users are maybe half the 2/3's as accurate as a moderately trained keys & mouse user. as a result if you do sue the controller in shooters expect to get facerolled alot

weve had this arguement before i can supply the data on this (this is primarily why there hasnt been a cross platform fps or tps since shadowrun)

Im aware that some of the best gamers are on mouse and keyboard and i thouroughly believe you when it comes to a better experiance, the only thing is i keep finding my fingers are reaching for triggers and thumbsticks, ill definately look into a controller but i'll continue to try with keyboard and mouse

You'll have to get used to the change with time. There are controllers you can plug into the machine if that's better though.

Obviously the best thing is practice. You may want to try a game like Portal or Portal 2, where you can get used to mouse movement and general "FPS" controls, but it's not really an FPS, and there's no rush or pressure while learning.

Just keep practicing and eventually you'll get the hang of it but don't expect to be a pro in just a month.

It took me about a month or 2 to fully adjust to KB/M where I could control my character fluidly and not having to stand there for a second while I remembered which button I needed to press to accomplish what I was trying to do. I've greatly improved since then and can hang with most other players on the games I play online.

you can just use an xbox 360 controller or if you have a ps3 controller you can make it emulate a 360 controller using this program MotioninJoy

You don't need to unecessarily subject yourself to the mouse and keyboard when there are many games that support both controller types. PC gaming facilitates gaming on a variety of controller schemes. If you like gaming with the controller most modern games are ready out of the box without any configuration or need for adjustment.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but the first time I used the keyboard and mouse on my laptop to play Unreal, I couldn't believe how wonderful it felt. Aiming with a mouse felt just as natural as breathing. Using the keyboard wasn't terribly hard to adjust to except for getting the feel of reaching for the right buttons to melee or throw a grenade, then my hand would have to find the wasd keys for movement again. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing as far as first person shooters go. I tried to go back to analog aiming on ps3, and the easiest time I seemed to have was Modern Warfare 3 as the analog aiming seems to be perfectly balanced to my playstyle, but such just wasn't the case with all games like Crysis on ps3. I played that game a bunch and still spray bullets all over the place when trying to aim. When aiming with mouse, I'm absolutely dead on. Trust me when I say that if you practice, and get aclimated to keyboard and mouse, going back to analog aiming with a controller will have you spraying bullets all over the place.

I had the same problem years ago when I started pc gaming but now I find controllers clunky at best. Just takes a little time.

You can buy yourself a wired or wireless xbox controller for PC which I personally use for my PC platform, driving and fighting games. However many genres on the PC tend to favour mouse+keyboard setup which include RTS, MMO, MOBA and FPS where using a controller will put you at an inherent disadvantage.

The mouse+keyboard setup is superb once you get the hang of it so I encourage you to stick with it and reap in the benefits once you become accustomed to it.

Well, I do have a few pointers, and like the others allready stated, controllers works just fine on a PC, it has a history of having alot of control schemes (flightsticks, gamepads, and so on).

However, this is my best advise to learn how to use the KB/M find a simple fps to play in SP, any game that only has movement, jump, duck and shoot.

the basics are thebest to learn first, grenades, reloads, fineaim/scopes, all of that best left out to begin with.

And just play the game from start to finish, well, the old Quake games would be a pretty good starting point, and although a bit more complex the first HL (has reload, and secondary fire so it is a bit more complex and requires more fine movement

Most games these days are compatible with a 360 controller. Just plug and play with a wired one, or get one the windows wireless ones. I play most third person action games (like GTA4, Just Cause 2, and the Arkham games) with a 360 controller. Also sometimes first person games that are a bit slower paced, like Fallout 3 and Skyrim, if I'm feeling lazy and want to plug into the tv and lay on the couch. For shooters, though, you'll really be better off just practicing with the mouse and keyboard. Aside from the inherently better accuracy with a mouse, another thing to keep in mind is that the console versions of just about every shooter employ at least a little bit (and some times a lot) of auto aim, and that's how the analog stick controllers even work as well as they do. The PC versions won't have that auto-aim, even if you choose to use a controller. Some games may have an option to turn on some auto aim, but only in single player, obviously.

When i first started playing on my atarti 2600 I had to get used to the controller to play its games. When i first played games on my Amstrad CPC, C64 and then the Amiga 2000 I had to get used to using a Joystick to play games. When i fist played Wolfenstein on PC I had to get used to mouse and Keyboard. When i first played my Sega Master System, Sega Megadrive, SNES, Atari Jaguar, N64, Playstation, Gamecube and Xbox I had to get used to a new controller in all instances.

Learning to play games on PC with a mouse and keyboard is no different to learning to play games on any other system that has a different controller. Just practice and eventallyit willstart to come naturally. IMO mouse and Keyboard is by far the best control method for most games.

I have a wired controller for my PC. It's good for some games, but bad for others, especially if you have to map the controls yourself. The controllers are good for relaxed gaming. If you want the quickest response, just get some practice with the KB/M
