I recently purchased oblivion purely because of good reviews and the fact that it was only 30 dollars and enjoyed it a hell of alot although it did seem kind of simplistic at times and the story was **** i then decided to buy the witcher and would have to rate it as one of my favourite games of all time, iloved it that much. so i was wondering what other rpg's would be a great buy (that are relatively modern) that are kind of similiar in their style to the witcher or oblivion, keep in mind i hate turn based combat (final fantasy for one, no offense :P). any help would be appreciated, thanks alot :)

If you're into RPGs, I've got some steps you should do:

Buy a Playstation 2.

Buy Chrono Trigger (I believe it's in some special type of package).

Buy Chrono Cross.

Get Final Fantasy 7.

Hell, get Final Fantasy 8 and 9 too.

Final Fantasy Anthology is a good one.

There's a bunch o' good ones out there. But if you're into RPGs, buy the real RPGs. Not the American attempts at storylines. They're classics, but also the best there will ever be.

Jade Empire is decent, though its more action oriented than The Witcher.

Stalker is a great fps/rpg game. I have never played a game like it before so it was something different for me. If you like Oblivion then try Stalker.

i believe that bethseda had plans for a game that was 'oblivion with guns'. its called rogue warrior or something like that. something to look for maybe...

i picked up KOTOR1 for $20. check it out. you said you dont like turnbased combat well its a bit of a mixture. it cues up your attacks and you can pause time to set them up, but apart from that real time all the way!

You should definitely try Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines as well. It's a superb RPG.

EDIT: ^Oblivion with guns? Sounds like Fallout 3.

Ironfungus

Useful post in that it's completely wrong, and a perfect guide to what not to do. It's also a sobering illustration of the ways in which exposure to laughably bad Japanese games - and the tortured translations and ridiculous plots therein - impair judgement and basic language functions. (I'd agree with youthat some (unreal? vaporware?) "American attempts at RPGs" are classics, but I suspect that's not what you intended to say.)

Best RPG e va hr is Vampire: Bloodlines.

Good old RPGs include the Black Isle and BioWare classics (not including KotOR, obviously) like Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, and Icewind Dale.

Maybe you'd like Bioshock? You might enjoy Half-Life 2, which is as much an RPG as some of the other games recommended here.

Don't listen to him, he's a troll

JRPGs aren't even real RPGs They are action adventure games. There are no choices (in dialogue or quest, can't be good or evil), no consequences, no customization( in most J"RPGs" you can't choose your race and class and and every one of them you can't costumise your face), too linear

In RPGs you are supposed to be the character you are controlling (that's why it's called ROLE PLAYING)

I still like them, but they aren't RPGs

Japanese games have the most unoriginal and repetitive stories ever!

In every last one of them it's: "you killed my master or destroyed my village, now you want to conquer the world and I the girly virgin teenager that is afraid of girls and has huge eyes with my yu-gi-oh hair and my oversized blade will stop you"

Please play Fallout or Planescape: Torment and see what role playing means

My TOP 5 RPGs:

01. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
02. The Witcher
03. Jade Empire
04. Fable: The Lost Chapters
05. Neverwinter Nights 2

The problem is that the best RPG's aren't modern. There's Gothic 3, but you'll most likely throw your screen out of the window because all the bugs make you mad.
