Soon I plan on getting a 10,000 rpm hd and 4 gigs of ram and I thought about using the old hd for pictures, music, videos, etc and the new one for games only. My question is, should I stay with xp for the new upgrade or go to vista?

I know that vista uses the 4 gigs of ram and that xp will only use 3 or soemthing like that. I'm also using the 32 bit version of both OS's.

Both OS's use the same amount of ram when 32 bit, vista just lies about it. I say upgrade to vista 64bit OEM... but thats just because I have used it for a year now with no issue. Also, OEM means no cables, so grab a sata cable.

vista uses more RAM than XP 32 or 64 (supposedly caches lots of programs), but theres no reason not to go with vista unless your really attached to XP.

I wasn't talking about the space it takes up on memory... I was talking about the amount it could read.... unless you really think he meant XP took up 3 gigs of ram idle.

It uses more RAM only because its designed to open and load files more quickly. I have'nt came across a game nor program yet that I cant operate due to insignificant RAM usage. Im Only sporting 2gigs RAM / Vistax64 Ultimate.

Go with XP, you'll get better games performace (sometimes by quite a bit expecially if you have older/slower hardware). The way I see it, there's just no reason to get Vista, pretty much all Vista exclusive games can be run in XP. There just isn't enough gain by getting Vista to outweigh the fact that it's slower and bloated.

Its not slower - its a nicer OS. One should own it for a while before they make thier criticisms. All the top power rigs today are supporting Vista x64. Its not bad.

Thanks for the responses! I already own vista home premium and have installed it before, so does that mean if I want the 64bit version I have to pay more?

Stick with xp. Wait for Windows 7 (Vista always seemed like a beta to me)

Go with Vista. Its really not that bad anymore I don't see what people are smoking. I can play any game with no problem. Not buggy and 32 bit vista now reads all 4 gigs of RAM with that sp1 update :).

I can't get enough of Vista. I love it. I was mad at myself for being so optimistic about it before even trying it.

It does not actually use it... they just got tired of answering phone calls from people asking where their ram is. It is just patched to say 4GB in the system profile now.
