I am getting a new computer. The problem is it only has a Intel GMA3100 graphics card. I was going to update the card to a Geforce 8500GT. Will this card be any good to play games made up to the end of 2007?

the 8500 isn't a very card. It could probably play most of the games in 2007, but don't expect anything pretty.

I was just hoping to be able to play games like Gears, CoD4, WiC, etc. I would prefere the graphics to be medium. But still low doesn't bother me.

Probably $150 Canadian. I was going to get a 8500GT because I could get a good deal on it.

the 8500 GT will not get anything better than low - medium on low resolution on demanding games like CoD 4 and Gears. Get a 8800 GT, plain and simple.

you obviously aren't a hardcore gamer, just get a 8600 GT since they are so cheap you will be able to play most games out now on a medium setting (depending on your screen size something like a 19'' would be fine) ... if you want to spend a bit more go for a 9600GT unless you can find a 8800GT for about the same price. But the 8500GT isn't actually made for gaming so don't buy it. Also DO NOT buy it from a place like Best Buy, or Staples business Depot or anything like that, if you area in the states use newegg, in canada use canadacomputers.com or ncix.com

That's not a good deal at all though, 243 dollars for a 175 dollar card with a cooler on it that isn't necessary... DON"T BUY THAT CARD!

What do you have? Most video cards come with adapters anyway.

wado-karate

they usually come with a small adapter in the GPU box, my old monitor wasn't compatible either but you just screw the adapter in the DVI port and you are good to go

Yup my 8800GT from xfx did come wtih an adapter, so did my old 7600 GT from xfx so odds are if you buy that 8800 GT from xfx you will get an adapter that will make your non dvi monitor compatible with your video card

no prob, goodluck with your decision, but a word to the wise for the future (and mostly the near future because nvidia is changing their product labels) but a X600 series card so 6600, 7600, 8600, 9600, is the midrange card for that line it will do a decent job playing newer games on mid/high settings and for most people is more than sufficient. the x800 cards are higher end giong from GT, GTX, Ultra ... anything else like x300, x400, x500 they are typically workstation cards or something a crappy computer store will throw in to make people believe it's a gaming machine, they really aren't very good.

I agree, but avoid old series (5,6,7nvidia 9,x1 ATI).
