you need, cpu, gpu, motherboard, ram, case, power supply, dvd drive, hard drive and operating system

the cpu and motherboard have to have the same socket. ie core 2 duo e8400 uses lga 775 so the motherboard has to be lga 775. or a athlon x2 uses am2 so the motherboard has to be am2. the graphic card uses pcie so make sure the motherboard has pcie.

a good cheap build would be something like a core 2 duo e4500 or amd 5400x2 nvida 9600gt or ati 38702gb ddr2 800 320gb hdd

First off, welcome to Gamespot Forums man...

Now the best thing to do is decide if you are going to go with AMD cpu or INtel cpu. Then decide what you are willing to spend. The best thingn is to follow what is said above my post. See if you can get an equivalent for the AMD side. Its all down to preference here. Although at the moment Intel is wipping AMD's ass in the cpu front.

As for Geforce 9600GT its a very good card for the price i have it and running Crysis on very high settings in DX9. For Dx10 i dont know what it will do.

Playing games at max settings, but not paying top dollar for it is virtually impossible so its down to budget for your. Just get nothing under 2gig of ram. From there work on your budget and read up on the products that you find on Tomshardware or just ask here.

I think your budget is the judge here like they said, for atight one, AMD setups will be better, otherwise Intel is the route to go.
Another factor, that if you do have any parts that you can use from keyboard, mouse, optical drivers or even some old HDD that you dont need.

The good thing that you wll save some money because you have your TV as amonitor so you dont need to worry about the monitor purchase.
