Im looking at doing some more PC gaming and I just have some basic questions about steam.
Is this the best way to buy PC games?
Is there any disadvantage to using steam?
Anything I should know before I get started?
Thanks

1) The best way of buying games for PC, depends on where you live, the DD services are pretty good in general.
Steam is a pretty good allround service that autoupdates your games, and allowes you to fix minor problems without redownloading the entire game again (if needed)
GOG is a really good site if you want to get your hands on some old classics, it is cheap, and the games qorks rather well.
2) The downsides of steam is ofcourse the net usage, if you have a Cap then steam will kill it fast. It does have an offline mode. If you live in the US or some places in the EU steam is more expencive then shops tho. Another downside is the sales on Steam, this is sort of a downlide in a kind of good way, alot of games really cheap, but it is really easy to begin impulse buying stuff.
3) Well, there is not alot to know to get started, Steam is VERY user friendly, altho I do advise reading the requirements (especially what is written with small letters) before buying a game. Also you can not return a game or get a refund, all sales are final, in some rare cases you can get a refund, but it is the exception rather then the rule.
4) Altho I am sure you know, but all your transactions and games are tied to one account, you can not migrate games from one account to another, so it is somewhat important to make an account knowing this. The good thing is that the account is not physical, and you can play any of your games on any pc, as long as it has steam.
Why does steam have such high net usage?
Furycliff
Steam itself does not have high net usage, but games suually stand between 6-15 gigs nowadays. It is somewhat limited what some people can dl with thier net caps.
Also the beforementioned autoupdates, are something that is a bit hard to control, you can disable it, altho it is per game basis. Since PC games usually gets updated alot and they are mandetory, it is better to leave it on.
So it is not steam itself, it is the games :\ If you do not have a cap or atleast a high cap, then it likely wont matter alot to you ^^

Is this the best way to buy PC games?
argueably yes.. it beats most retail games anyway..
Is there any disadvantage to using steam?
yes if its a hot ticket item like its on sale for a ridiculous price and its a good game.. you will be waiting a day to download it (possibly)
Anything I should know before I get started?
steam & valve will never ask for your personals or password or login beyond the account generation itself EVERalso add me to steam: TheCrazyGuyIf you live in the US or some places in the EU steam is more expencive then shops tho.

In the US? steam's the same price as those at the shops from what i've seen.
In EU i dont know, i do know that in EU they sometimes would sell a game in the states for say 19.99 US dollars and then sell it for 19.99 Euro in EU without converting the us prices over to euro instead.
