New egg, who I have bought alot of components from, has gone off the deep end as of late, especially with new items.

Case and Point, Evga's 780i when last available was 349.00!!! The Manufacturer lists it as 259.00 What's this about? I called evga and the rep couldnt believe it either.

Same goes with the new Asus 780i. More than 50% markup? I can't believe it personally, but theres a sucker born every minute and I guess bragging rights cost alot more that I thought.

But seems to me lately everybody is cheaper than New egg (unless there is some sort of rebate or its on special)

Anyone else seem to feel this way? Who are you buying from. I got my MOBO from zipzoomfly for 25.00 cheaper than newegg AND I got a rebate.

They are still awesome for a lot of parts, but when demand is amazingly high for some items, they just grab all the cash they can. I can understand why they would hop up the price, especially when it still sold out at that price. If people are impatient, they will pay absurd prices to get it NOW

Newegg hasn't been 'the cheapest' since maybe 2001 or 2002. They have an automatic price adjustment system that dynamically raises or lowers the price depending on the demand for an item. If a lot of people buy it, the price WILL go up, guaranteed. When people stop, the price WILL go down, guaranteed. Their prices aren't their claim to fame, though - it's their shipping and customer service. You can almost always find things for cheaper elsewhere.

That probably has to do with there automatic pricing system that takes stock into account, especially considering I can't find a single 780i board on there site now.

While I do notice somethings costing more there than other places, I just buy those items where ever has the best deal. But in best deal I take newegg quick shipping and customer service into consideration. So for a few dollars more I will still probably go with the EGG. Now I got my mobo and CPU from ClubIT. Newegg was outta stock on the Maximus Formula SE, and ClubIT, unlike newegg, could guarantee I get the G0 stepping Q6600.

But I do love neweggs customer support. I made an order last Wednesday, a case, pci card, flash drive, and some ram. The case was this one, $70 minus $20 promotional code, minus $50 mail in rebate. So it will only cost me $17.72 (shipping) after the rebate.

Well the case came Monday. But the other items had still not shipped. I contacted there support to see if there were any problems, and they told me there had been a back-up and it would ship that day. Also since they had not shipped it within 48 hours they refunded my shipping, so I got a free case.

I have had very few minor issues with newegg, and there customer support made them right almost immediately.

They did the same thing with the 680i and the LT variant. They're also gouging the HD 3870. It came out originally for $209, and now it sits at $249.

The good news is you can always shop elsewhere.

Newegg can be expensive on some items........but for my upcoming build, I comparison shopped between them, ClubIT.com, Zipzoomfly.com and Mwave.com and came up with a total price that still fits well within the price range I expected.

I guess this is just another object lesson in shopping around/researching for the best deal......

I agree with most of the comment here.

But Last time I checked a 50-100% price increase is gouging. Its one thing to make a profit on a high demand item, but you have to remember that alot of these corps have "ins" with the manufacturer. Ever notice newegg seems to get the newest hardware first? They are the only ones with the 780i asus board now, they were first (and only I saw ) who had the evga 780i.

Seems a bit underhanded since the manufacturer sets the retail price, this is one of the only businesses where this kind of increase is accepted. Imagine paying 50-100% more for a car that was in demand!!!!

They have it listed as G0. I think they used to have the B3 also but I can't find it now. Here's the G0 OEM, they have the retail if you want that one.

I got my dad and aunt Q6600's from newegg for their PC's, they both got B3's, now this was over a month ago. They will never OC so it's no big deal for them.

That's happened quite a bit in the past. =P Cars are one of the best examples of deliberate price gouging, though the internet has helped cut down on that in the last decade or so. Most recent examples are probably the Mini Coopers... in addition to being on a waiting list for the first year or so, in CA you were looking at paying 25%+ over MSRP if you were lucky. I wouldn't be surprised if price gouging kicks in on the Nissan GT-R when it comes out, too. When the Miata first was released around 1990ish, it was going for nearly twice its MSRP for a while.

I stand corrected. I guess I expected New Egg to be a bit more stable than your average trendy car salesman! :)

(by the way I have a mini cooper, paid below sticker)

Still, who do you shop with, and is the service really that much worse in other retailers? Most of the time you end up dealing with the manufacturer for problems anyway right? Thats why I bought EVGA, ever tried to call Asus for anything?

Funny Story,

Called Asus following is a rough transcript.

Asus Tech : hello , thank you for calling Asus can I help you?

Me: Yes I was wondering if the new MOBO you have can support 2 way sli as well as 3 way.

Asus Tech guy: It will only support quad Sli.

Me: What? Quad SLI? I was not aware of any board supporting Quad Sli yet?

Asus Tech: Yes I have confirmed it here in my computer, It supports Quad Sli.

Me: What about the 45n Chips, what support will it have for those

Asus Tech: It will not support them.

Me; I thought that was the main selling point?

Asus Tech: No it will not support any new chips

Me: Dude I dont think you know what your talking about ( I knew that it supported duo core, was not sure about Yorkfield)

Asus Tech: Let me transfer you to someone that can help.

5 minutes on hold.....

10 minutes on hold...........

15 minutes on hold...........

Gave up.

Called Evga with simliar questions On and off in 10 minutes.

If you talking about this kind of difference in service then maybe the 75% markup is worth it, but I just don't think New egg is that much better than Zipzoom or directron or tiger.

ncixus.com has 780i boards for 250$. 100$ difference is pretty huge. I never ordered at NewEgg (I am Canadian) and I dont see what the big fuss about that place is. NCIX seems to have better pricing.

When I first saw the eVGA 780i on newegg, it was 259.99 or 269.99 + free shipping. I remember because eVGA sent me an e-mail offering to upgrade my 680i to a 780i for $70, and I wanted to see how good of a deal that was.

:| That happens ALL THE TIME in the auto industry Audi R8: Brilliant Car, still got a 30k GBP mark-up in the UK for one over MSRP. (new) Pontiac GTO: Awesome muscle car and very simplistic in design, leading to a (relatively) cheap thrill ride. Idiotic salesmen and $33k markups later, the car is discontinued after a year because "they can't sell enough." Used to be you could haggle a dealer down to get a used Honda Civic for less-than $10k USD for a good one. Now with fuel prices as they are, NO dealer is selling one for anything other than sticker price. Porsche Boxster: $41k off the showroom floor for base. By the time the lease is up, it's not even enough to break even on a trade to a Toyota Corolla. The new Nissan GT-R: Just in Japan alone, there are already reports of people having to pay $70k USD over MSRP just to secure one.

Lookat this...

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=205631

and this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024

Still seems excessive to me, no matter what. Especially when most other retailers are not gouging. It also seems to me that Newegg somehow gets things first....

anyone else notice this?

Wow really? I don't shop from there, but that's a huge kick in the nuts to the customer. That's pretty much the textbook definition of price gouging - as soon as people start buying items, jack up the price and keep jacking it up the more they buy. I wouldn't buy from a store that does that :|

Also, since when is customer service the main draw of a store? If you want customer service, you find a good local PC retailer that will offer good warranties/returns/RMAs/tech support in person. You can't bring your computer in to newegg and have them repair it or build a new system, can you?

I live out in the "country" they ain't no PC stores in these here parts, well at least nothing with a half-decent selection. I can get just about any PC part from newegg and have it at my door within 3-5 days.

I consider customer support very important, it might not be the main draw, but it is a big part of it IMHO. And nobody but me touches my computer, so that last part don't bother me personally.

I wonder if those who defend such price structures would feel the same if it were milk or gas? If Gas was 7.00 a gallon we would HAVE to pay for it to survive. (keep your job, go to the doctor). Would that be fair? I guess since its a luxury item its not the same. But get people used to this type of thing on the luxury stuff, then you can wack em for stuff they need. Have you seen the price of milk lately? 4.00 a gallon, more expensive than gas per gallon, and I say thats a needed item for people, especially children.

I think the thing being overlooked is the MSRP. It is the Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. After a company buys an item from the manufacturer, they can sell it for whatever they want.

Newegg has every right to sell the items a little higher than normal. The demand is so high they could probably double the price and still sell out. From what I've seen, they're never anywhere close to 2x or even 1.5x markup from MSRP.

This is common in the electronics industry. It's not like Newegg is some horrible company taking advantage of people. The Wii was such a huge hit this holiday season that the most common way to buy one was as a $700 bundle with a ton of crappy games. This is all legal and smart positioning when demand hugely outweighs demand.

Again , yes on a luxury item, but hold your breath, this will happen with everyday things as well, after all, what can you not creat an "artifical shortage" of?

Thats the problem here, I believe this demand is being created by New Egg, not true supply shortages. I think the tech industry in particular manufactures things extra slow (or holds back stock) to "create" demand shorts, in the interest of driving up price. The problem is , any industry can do this and we would be stuck. Gas is the obvious example, but any industry can really create there own supply shorts and raise prices screaming "supply and demand , supply and demand" the the "cha ching cha ching" cash flow sound!

I spoke with a rep from EVGA who said it was unlikey they would have any boards before Feb, so where is New egg getting them if the SUPPLIER site is out>?
