AMD Preparing Radeon HD 4890, Slated for April

AMD has been working the ATI RV790 GPU for a while now. It appears to be like it will take a little longer for the company to release an SKU based on it. Contradicting earlier reports, it is known that the RV790-based SKUs stay within the Radeon HD 4800 series, and not form the HD 4900 series.

The flagship single-GPU product based on the RV790 is to be called Radeon HD 4890. Samples based on the RV790XT A11 are currently running at speeds of 850/975 MHz (core/memory). AMD is reportedly telling its partners that the RV790XT is expected to be around 20% faster than the RV770XT (HD 4870), and has NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 285 in its sights, for head-on competition. Additionally, AMD may force NVIDIA to reconsider its pricing, since the RV790XT is expected to be priced between US$199 to US$249, up to $150 cheaper than the GeForce GTX 285 in its current pricing. Unfortunately, one has to wait till April.

Isn't competition great.

Yeah, the GTX 285 is a great card, we just put one in my friend's rig, it's running great. It'll be nice to see ATI offering this.

I think I might upgrade to a UD3P and put these in crossfire. That would be nice.

Or better yet, if the hydra chip turns out how it's looking... two of these with that.... wow that would take anything.

or is Lucid making there own chipset ? or who motherobard manifaucter will allow you to add hydra ? how it work in detail ? i know nothing beside
that it will wipe all Current Preset of Crossfire & Sli from AMD / INTEL / NVidia NF200 which is already killed by intel according HARDOCP on all review

If you can wait two months then I guess, but I plan on just going ahead and building my rig now. The 4870 should be fine for now

Certain graphical processes can bring any graphic card to it's knees. Just look at the 3dmark Vantage, is optimised enough, of course it is. Did they not write the 3dmark Vantage good enough? Would you get 200FPS if it were you bet you wouldn't.

If you got 15FPS would you say it isn't optimised enough or the hardware?

Of course not, but i'm talking about console ports here, and i know a lot of these games can probably run at least 5-10 FPS faster.

Crysis/warhead still has not been mastered yet(imo, no 100 fps average on a normal gaming system; as in using one card and not using multiple cards and extreme ocing). And with new titles comming out thatll push the limits of cards more ATI/Nvidia gotta be top game.

100 FPS average would probably mean 40-60 minimum FPS. 60FPS average would mean 30-40 minimum, so it's not perfect. Also, 120HZ monitors are coming out soon :)

They will use one eventually, when games really start making a difference with physics engine (having an extra waving flag isnt worth it at least yet :P)

If you save up a bit more you may be able to grab two HD4890's to put them in Crossfire :)

true but if a game is averaging only slightly above 60-70 fps it may still dip lower then that and lag so having more fps cant hurt i always say ;)

Im pretty sure there will be a price war if 4890 end up faster or almost equivalent to 285 at the price of 200-300 nvidia is not stupid its just like 200 series dropping price overnight when 4800 series came out

Sorry i didnt meant to confuse. I was trying to add more to the conversation, but not exactly by asking to you. And yes it would be great

@DemetriP790

The HD4850 and HD4870 brought a nice price on nvidia gpu's. If this HD4890 follows the same patern, i guess the HD4800 series would end up as a great success to be remembered in the future :)
