and then this old ide seagate barracuda hard drive.

those are kinda the specs of my comp right now, running windows xp pro, and was wondering what i should upgrade next.

Was thinking i could get a new HD, then i could upgrade to vista for dx10, and maybe something else since HD's are cheap.

Or go with a new mobo, grab a crappy dual core processor and switch it out for the nice quad core in my basments computer

otherwise...not sure what to do. let me know your ideas, thanks.

Direct x 10 isnt all that and Windows 7 is around the corner. Your motherboard does support quad core cpu's, I would pick up a 4830 or 4850 and a Phenom 9850 and you will be set. But make sure to update your bios too.

To be honest i would wait for DX11 and Windows 7. By then GTX 300 series will be out and probably 8 core processors or a new I7. It's not that far away, i would wait.

Well, I was looking to upgrade for around $200 for now.

If the mobo doesn't support quad cores, then why suggest one? XD

If I got a new mobo, I would make sure to get intel socket to fit the quad from my downstairs computer.

Barghh...................then it's obvious you should swap that mobo and cpu into your rig :? OC it, if the mobo won't let you get a new one, then get a new monitor and a HDD like you want, later on you can upgrade your GPU.

I never said he had to change it out, i'm suggesting he buy a new one that's bigger/better.
