What are the possible risks for using a 'no brand name' 500 watt psu on this system: Core 2 E6750, 8800gt, Gigabyte P35-DS3L mobo, 5.1 speakers, 160 gig harddrive, 1 dvd rom drive, 19" wide screen lcd? Is there a possibility damaging any of these components?

I'm thinking twice of getting a Corsair 520 watt psu which is highly recommended. Because I can get a 'no brand name' 500 watt psu which is 4 times cheaper than the Corsair 520 watt. Need your advice. Thanks in advance.

If I was you I would get that Corsair PSU, you never scrimp and save on your PSU in my experience.

well, Pop...fizzz....'what the hell is that smell'. Thats what can, and often does, happen when you don't buy a decent power source.

It's not worth the risks, do it right the first time and don't look back.

I would never try to save on the power supply, because if it goes it can take the rest with it. And if you get a good power supply the first time it will probably be the longest lasting/most reusable part in your build.

I highly doubt that a generic 500W PSU could run an 8800gt anyway....

When I first started building PCs I always bought cheap PSUs. Once I had a 400W "codegen" PSU, didn't last long and when it died it took my 6600gt down with it.

Ultra,Earthwatt,Thermaltake. For the most part any PSU thats has a 70% or greater efficenty rating at max load and has 26A or geater on the 12v rail. You should be fine If you stick with those specs.
